MONMOUTH — Monmouth Community Players will return to musicals with a revival of an old favorite, “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown,” on Jan. 20-22 and 27-29.
The beloved story is told through a series of vignettes that mimic the four-panel format used by the original cartoon strip, “Peanuts,” by Charles M. Schulz. This pattern is supplemented with longer passages that are vaguely reminiscent of Shakespearean soliloquies and by musical interludes.
Audience members will experience an average day in the life of Charlie Brown, played by Jeff Fairfield of West Gardiner. They’ll see him through the eyes of his friends, in situations plucked right out of the comic strip; and hear his own musings as he eats his lunch on the school playground, complicated by the distant presence of his true love, the “little redheaded girl,” who is always just out of sight.
Lucy (Emily Trefethen of Monmouth) tries her luck at love by bulldozing her way through to the sensitive, 6-year-old musician Schroeder (Eric Lundquist of Augusta).
Lucy’s little brother, Linus (Garrett Crawford of Auburn) is thoughtful about many things, but fanatical when it comes to the matter of his blanket. Charlie Brown’s dog, Snoopy (Dustin Shepherd-Bussiere of Waterville) spends much of his time thinking of being something else — a gorilla, a jungle cat, a WWI flying ace.
Meanwhile, Charlie Brown’s sister, Sally (Karen Lipovsky of Monmouth) shares her frustration in the fine art of coat-hanger sculpture and her unique philosophy on life.
Lucy Rioux, former MCP artistic director and co-founder, is directing the show, with musical direction by Rebecca Caron; Ray Fletcher is producer. Other technical staff includes Miranda Shepherd-Bussiere, stage manager; Jocelyn Gray, assistant producer; Cindy Turcotte, set design; Jeanne Fletcher, lighting design; and Emily Trefethen, costumes.
“You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday at Cumston Hall, 796 Main St. For tickets, $12, call 514-4929.
