LEWISTON — Jackson A. Tupper, 91, of Durham passed away peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Montello Manor, with his loving wife of 69 years by his side.

He was born Sept. 26, 1920, in Durham, a son of Ernest and Sarah (Mitchell) Tupper. He was educated in Durham and Lisbon schools, graduating from Lisbon High School in 1938.

He married Alice Bourgoin on Sept. 12, 1942. Three days later, he began Army Air Force service in World War II, flying 32 missions over Germany as the belly gunner in a B-24 bomber. After the war, he worked at Worumbo Mill in Lisbon Falls for 40 years. He also owned and operated Tupper Construction and Country Acres Trailer Park, both in Durham. His last position was loader operator at Labbe Construction in Brunswick. For many years, he served as president of the Tupper Family Association of America. He was a lifelong member of Shiloh Chapel in Durham.

He was a wonderful storyteller and enjoyed flying his own plane, making furniture, raising chickens and baking. His molasses and chocolate chip cookies, zucchini bread and homemade ice cream were enjoyed by many. He liked to cut and weld steel, and to build machines by hand. The volleyball court he built in his side yard was a community gathering place for all ages for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Alice of Durham; one daughter, Joan Tupper Anderson and her husband, Jonathan, of Durham; two sons, Jackson II and Robert and his wife, Rhonda (Stevens), all of Durham; four grandchildren, Macee Turcotte Damon and her husband, David, of Arlington, Mass., Jason Turcotte and his wife, Jessica (White), of Durham, Melinda Tupper Benevides and her husband, Thomas, of New Bedford, Mass., and Mitchell Tupper and his longtime girlfriend, Sarah Young, of Milford; and six great-grandchildren, Cyndle, Trinity, Talon, and Jazmin Turcotte, and Christopher and Courtney Staples.

He was predeceased by a son, Thomas Tupper; six sisters; and three brothers.

The family wishes to thank his special home care provider Katrina, Irene (Nicki) Frye at Elder Independence of Maine and the caregivers at Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice and Montello Manor for the compassion and care they gave him over the last 18 months.
