RUMFORD — Cam Welch of Rumford, son of Pam and David Welch Jr., was presented with the 2012 DAR Good Citizen Award certificate and pin for Mountain Valley High School at an assembly on Feb. 8 by Deborah J. Judkins of Upton, chairman of the DAR Good Citizen committee of Colonial Daughters Chapter in Farmington, which sponsors the award to recognize excellence in seniors of seven local high schools each year.

The school faculty nominates several candidates for this honor each year. The person who is chosen to receive the honor must have demonstrated each of the qualities as defined by The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution to an outstanding degree. These qualities are dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. The student who most exemplifies the four qualities is chosen by either vote of the senior class or vote of the faculty and administrators, depending on the policy of the school. The sponsoring chapter presents the certificate, pin and monetary award to this student.

Cam is currently serving as Interact Club president, Student Council president, the Peer Helpers treasurer, the senior class secretary and National Honor Society vice president. Cam said, “Through these organizations I am proud to represent my town and school.” He has also participated in Boys State.

Cam helped organize the Student Council blood drive, where more than 130 pints of blood were donated. He also worked on the NHS food drive in December encouraging all students to contribute food to be donated to the local food bank. And, at the assembly where he was presented the DAR Good Citizen Award, Cam was featured in a music video encouraging donations of books for the other Maine NHS service project The World Wide Book Project. There is a donation box in the MVHS lobby where anyone from the community can donate books until March 1. The youth ministry at Cam’s church sings Christmas carols during December visits to the nursing home.

Cam is the founder and owner of Cam Welch Photography where his creative thinking has earned many customers who are absolutely amazed by the quality and clarity of his work. Cam’s participation in sports at MVHS includes nordic skiing, soccer and track teams. He is also on the Math Team, homecoming float committee and the prom committee. And, most importantly, Cam serves in many community organizations including G.R.A.M.P.S. (Greater Rumford Area Ministers Pantry Service), where he helps fight hunger.

Cam intends to go to college and major in business and marketing and wants to work for an advertising agency.
