WISCASSET — A welding accident led to a fast-moving fire that destroyed a Wiscasset business Sunday afternoon, said Wiscasset Fire Chief Rob Bickford.

Twin City Lock & Key, which is located at 137 Chewonki Neck Road, lay in charred shambles Monday, but owner Chris Cunha said he is exploring the possibility of rebuilding. No one was injured.

“That’s really all I care about,” said Cunha.

Cunha said he and his son were working in the building Sunday afternoon when there was a welding accident that led to the blaze. Though fire crews arrived within a few minutes, they were unable to save the metal-clad structure from near total destruction. Cunha and some of his employees were sifting through the ashes Monday in an attempt to recover whatever records and materials weren’t burned.

Bickford said Monday that fire crews from several towns assisted at the scene, and some were there until early Monday morning. He said the occupants of the building were welding on a car when the fire broke out. The gutted building is located adjacent to the Wiscasset Airport.

Cunha said he was in the process of expanding the building, which was evidenced by a foundation that had been poured. He said just about everything inside was lost, including two vehicles, but that the building was insured. Twin City Lock & Key, a 25-year-old locksmith and security system business that also has an office in Fitchburg, Mass., has operated out of its Wiscasset location for about nine years, with four or five employees.
