RUMFORD — Mountain Valley High School will host student-led conferences on Friday, March 9, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parents and guardians of high school students are encouraged to attend a half-hour conference. Parents unable to attend on March 9 should contact the student’s homeroom teacher.
Principal Matt Gilbert explained that student-led conferences are different from traditional parent-teacher conferences. “The student is the head of this conference. He or she runs the conference by explaining current progress and future plans,” he said. “The parent has the opportunity to listen and ask questions of their student and the homeroom teacher is there to answer questions about school practices and policy. It’s a great way for students to demonstrate accountability for their education.”
While the student and parent only meet with the student’s homeroom teacher, the parent may schedule time to see additional teachers.
Gilbert then listed reasons to attend: Hear about your student’s progress directly from the student, perhaps including unique never-heard excuses; Learn more information about your student’s progress than is shown in Powerschool; Demonstrate to your student that you are concerned about his or her education; Find out what your student is learning about in class; Help your student select classes for next year or learn about scholarship opportunities for seniors; See first-hand what your tax dollars are paying for; and Establish a personal relationship with your student’s homeroom teacher.
