BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — The University of Southern Maine baseball team extended its winning streak to four games Saturday sweeping a non-conference doubleheader at Bridgewater State University.
The Huskies took the opener 9-6 on the strength of a 13-hit attack, then completed the sweep behind the pitching of southpaws Logan Carman and Nick Douglass.
In the first game, junior Brett Barrett led the Huskies (5-1) with two hits and three RBI. Junior Nick Grady had three hits, including a double and a triple, and two RBI. Douglass earned a save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
In the nightcap, Carman won a pitchers duel with BSU senior Jim Balboni. Carman allowed only four hits and two walks while fanning four in 8.1 innings. The Huskies tied the game in the third on senior David Ricker’s sacrifice fly that scored freshman Dylan Morris. The Huskies scored the decisive run in the sixth on doubles by sophomore Forrest Chadwick and Tucker White.
Douglass came on for Carman in the ninth with one out and struck out two to pick up the save, his third of the season.
Bates splits pair with Haverford
HAVERFORD, Pa. — Bates College went to extra innings to extend its winning streak to six games, then had that streak snapped in the second game of a doubleheader split with Haverford College, 9-7 and 16-2.
The Bobcats watched Haverford score six runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 7-7, then scored two in the 10th for a 9-7 win.
After Alex Parker reached on fielder’s choice to put runners second and third with one out, Jeff Clausen scored Steve Burke with a sacrifice fly to left field. Parker scored the inusrance run on throwing error by the left fielder.
Kevin Davis drove in three runs and Mekae Hyde singled and scored a run for the Bobcats (8-3).
The Fords (7-7) put up three runs in the bottom of the first in Game 2, keyed by a two-run home run to right-center field by Alex Hudak, and coasted from there. Haverford starter Kyle Waney needed minimal run support, though, as he spread out four singles and one double over seven innings.
Men’s lacrosse
Bates 6, Wesleyan 5
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Freshman Tucker White fired in a low shot from 15 yards out with 1:26 left in sudden-death overtime to make a 6-5 winner of the Bates men’s lacrosse team over Wesleyan.
Kyle Starr finished the game with five points for Bates. He assisted on three other goals and now leads the Bobcats in scoring with four goals and seven assists for 11 points. The only goal he didn’t have a hand in was the winner. Jack Strain had a pair of goal for Bates.
Women’s lacrosse
Bates 15, Wesleyan 5
LEWISTON — Senior Joan O’Neill scored four goals to lead Bates to a convincing 15-5 victory over Wesleyan at Garcelon Field.
Kathy Yannopoulos scored twice and added three assists, while Jenna Dannis contributed two goals and one assist for the Bobcats (2-2). Maggie Reilly added a pair of goals with one assist, and SooHee Yoon, normally a defensive midfielder, scored her first two career goals.
