LEWISTON — Mezzo-soprano Joelle Morris and pianist Arthur Hosford will combine their talents to perform works by four Parisian and Broadway misfits Saturday, April 7, at the Franco Center.

Their “Voyage a Paris” program will feature compositions by Reynaldo Hahn, whose music captured the sentiment of La Belle Epoque (“The Beautiful Era”), beginning in the late 19th century and continuing until World War I; and Parisians Eric Satie and Francis Poulenc, known for their groundbreaking, avant-garde 20th century works; and Kurt Weill, a leading composer for the Broadway stage.

These composers were misunderstood during their era, but their music has stood the test of time.

Morris and Hosford will perform songs from Weill’s Broadway shows “Lady in the Dark,” “One Touch of Venus” and “Lost in the Stars,” among others. They will also perform a selection of Satie’s witty chansons, including “3 Melodies”(1916) and “La diva de l’empire.” Also featured will be song selections from Poulenc’s “Banalites” and “Parisiana;” as well as Hahn’s “Chansons grises” and “Si mes vers avez des ailes.”

Morris uses her dramatic voice and musical understanding to bring passion and depth to her performances — from opera’s darkest arias to jazz’s most memorable tunes to Broadway’s greatest hits.

She graduated in 2003 with a master’s degree in vocal performance from the University of Colorado’s Lamont Conservatory of Music in Denver. A finalist in the Metropolitan Opera Audition in Denver in that year, she has performed as Cherubino in “The Marriage of Figaro,” Dorabella in “Cosi fan Tutte” and Rosina in “The Barber of Seville.”

Morris conducted an established 60-person choir based in Thonon-les-Bains, France, as well as a 16-member choir, Double Croche, which she formed in 2006. She has also taught voice to adults and children through her private studio for many years.

Tickets to the 7:30 p.m. concert are $14/$16 advance, $16/$18 day of show. For tickets, call 689-2000 or visit www.brownpapertickets.com/event/216908. The Franco Center is at 46 Cedar St.
