FARMINGTON — A York eighth-grader once again topped 100 students from all over the state competing in the National Geographic Bee for Maine at the University of Maine at Farmington.
Benjamin Maclean, 14, was Maine’s winner last year.
The top winners of each state earn the opportunity to represent their state in May in the national competition at the National Geographic Society’s Washington, D.C., headquarters.
After five preliminary rounds, 10 finalists competed and narrowed it down to a championship round between the top two.
Maclean faced Archer Thomas, a seventh-grader from Buxton, and won by answering two out of three questions correctly – one more than Thomas.
The third place winner was Luca Deangelis, a seventh-grader from Readfield.
Only one girl, Farmington’s Miriam Cohen, made it into the top 10 finalists. Cohen is an eighth-grade student at Mt. Blue Middle School.
“It was fun,” said Cohen, daughter of Jonathan and Victoria Cohen of Farmington.
A class and then school bee was held to determine who would attend the National Geographic Bee on Friday, she said.
