Phillips ice out winner

PHILLIPS — The 2012 ice out contest winner has been announced. Toothaker Pond was ice-free as of 3:53 p.m. Saturday, March 24. Tim Bowen of Avon had the closest prediction, making him the winner of the $360 pot. Bowen gets to keep $180 of that for himself. He has chosen to donate the other half to the Phillips Area Food Pantry.

“Everybody was surprised,” said Winona Davenport, one of the event organizers. “It was really early this year.”

Underwood open house

FAYETTE — The Underwood Memorial Library will have an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, in honor of National Library Week. The public is invited to see changes made and enjoy refreshments.

Homemakers cooking demo

Genealogy topic is research

FARMINGTON — The Sandy River Valley Chapter, MGS, will meet at the Farmington Public Library at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 14. The program will be about using deeds in genealogy research and the kind of information found on a deed that will be of value to the genealogist. Anyone with an interest in genealogy is welcome.

Grange supper, contra dance

FARMINGTON — The Farmington Grange will have a public supper from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14. The menu will consist of lasagna, casseroles and desserts. The cost for adults is $7, children 12 to 5 will be $3 and under 5 are free.

At this time there isn’t a handicapped entrance. Dinners to go can be made available. Anyone interested in joining the grange can pick up an application and talk to members about what they do. Benefits from the monthly suppers go towards continually upgrading the building and commercial kitchen, which is available for rent. The Farmington Grange Hall is at 124 Bridge St. in West Farmington.

There is a separate admission to the contra dance, with a family and beginners dance from 6:30 to 7:30. The regular contradance is 7:30 to 11 with live music. All are welcome.

Square Dance clubs join forces

PARIS — The Swingin’ Bears Square Dance Club of South Paris and Friendship Squares of Wilton will present square and round dancing from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at the Oxford Hills Middle School, 100 Pine St.

The husband and wife team of Kip and Linda Moulton of Scarborough will be doing the calling and cueing.

There will be two mainstream tips, then a plus tip for the square dancing, which will be called by Kip. Linda will cue easy and intermediate levels for the round dancing.

Refreshments will be served at intermission. There will be door prizes and a pot o’ gold drawing. Admission is $6 per person. Non-dancers are welcome at no charge.

Nonviolent protests to be taught

AUGUSTA — MOVE ON.Org in collaboration with the 99% Spring and other partners will be presenting a nonviolent direct action training from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church, 69 Winthrop St.

Participants will learn nonviolent tactics and strategies on how to do direct civic action protests during presentations throughout the day.

‘Courageous’ movie to air

FARMINGTON — Living Waters Assembly of God will show the movie “Courageous” at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at 547 Wilton Road.

Filled with action-packed police drama, “Courageous” is the fourth film from Sherwood Pictures, the movie-making ministry of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Ga. Thrift Shoppe needs donations

RANGELEY — The Episcopal Church Women of the Church of the Good Shepherd Thrift Shoppe wish to thank all who have made donations and volunteered the time, energy and expertise required to continue the outreach in the community.

Donations of clean and usable clothing and small household items are accepted. Anyone interested in volunteering to help with sorting and displaying is encouraged to call the church office at 864-3381 or just show up.

The Thrift Shoppe, at 2614 Main St. in the Episcopal Church Undercroft, is open Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Cafe, activities for seniors

READFIELD — Seniors and retirees looking for something social or interesting to do are invited to enjoy tea, coffee and activities at the new Senior Center/Cafe at Maranacook Middle School, Route 17, from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday and Wednesdays.

Tea, coffee, muffins, games/cards and presentations are provided. Participants are invited to bring knitting, crafts, books, writing, instruments and friends.

Activities include hiking the trails and helping students plant gardens or with other special projects. Ideas and suggestions are invited.

Parking is available in the first lot on the right in reserved spaces facing the cafeteria.
