RUMFORD — Zaniness will be the order of the day on Friday and Saturday, April 27-28, when the Rumford Association of the Advancement for the Performing Arts presents “All’s Fair In Show Business.”
The play, about four women vying for the leading role in a TV commercial, is one of two comedies to be presented at RAAPA’s annual dinner theater. The other comedy, “At The Border,” reveals what happens when the mayors of two bordering townships compete for control of the international border crossing that divides the communities.
The women with “Golden Girl”-like antics in “All’s Fair in Show Business” will be played by Nancy Demings, Jennifer Foster, Mary Hickey and Connie Venskus . The plot centers around a TV commercial being made to advertise Hildys Hamburgers. Real-life couple, Martha and Al Hanington, play director and technician of the TV studio.
Playing the feuding mayors in “At the Border” are Wayne Landry and Steve Borstelmann. Demings has the role of the nosy reporter and Jim Robertson is the argumentative custodian who thinks he’s got all the answers. Hanington and Gail Parent portray two aging hippies still living in the sixties, who make several hilarious attempts to cross the border. Rounding out the cast are Anita Murphy and Foster as the mayor’s two secretaries and Kurt Cihak as a conniving government agent.
In addition, the RAAPA chorus will perform songs including “Let Me Entertain You,” “42nd Street,” “New York, New York,” “Hey Good Lookin’,” “Lollipop,” “Dream a Little Dream of Me” and “Put on a Happy Face.”
Tickets are $30 for entertainment and food, which includes complementary hors d’oeuvres during the opening social hour (with cash bar), followed by a buffet dinner of bacon-wrapped pork loin, Italian chicken breast, baked lasagna, mashed potatoes, vegetables, salad, dinner rolls and ice cream brownie sundaes.
