Eastern Star meets today

AUBURN — Pine Cone Chapter 26 Order of the Eastern Star will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 12, at the Masonic Hall, 1021 Turner St.

The chapter will be having a stated meeting. Potluck supper will be at 6 p.m.

Commercial Travelers to meet

MECHANIC FALLS — Twin City Council of the United Commercial Travelers of America will meet at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at Bucknam Oaks. A potluck supper will be served following the business meeting. All members and guests are welcome.

GLBT group forming

AUGUSTA — Integrity, a national organization of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) Episcopalians, is forming a new chapter in the Central Maine area. A meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 9 Summer St. GLBT people of different faith traditions are also invited to the meeting.

Oral cancer screenings

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing and the Maine Oral Health Program are partnering for the third consecutive year to offer free oral cancer screenings. Screenings will take place Monday, April 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rumford Hospital’s Specialty Clinic and Thursday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Multipurpose Center, 145 Birch St., Lewiston. No appointment is necessary. The screenings will be performed by a dentist and are non-invasive and painless.

More than 50,000 Americans were diagnosed with cancers of the head and neck last year. Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week is April 22-28. Community college fair

LEWISTON — A Community College Fair will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at the Hillview Resource Center, 77 Rideout Ave.

Dog obedience classes

LEWISTON — Great Falls Dog Obedience Club will begin another six-week dog obedience class starting Wednesday, April 18. Dogs and puppies must be at least 3 1/2 months old and vaccinated. YMCA holding fundraising

LEWISTON — The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA kicked off their Annual Giving Campaign on April 9. Campaign funds will support the Y’s scholarship program for children, youth and families who do not have the financial means to be a part of the Y’s enrichment and health programs.

Last year the Y’s Annual Giving Campaign distributed $58,122 to 687 youth and families of the community that included inclusion to health programs, childcare and after-school programs, Camp Connor and youth sports.

This year’s goal is $60,000.

Temple offering Judaism intro

AUBURN — Temple Shalom to offer an adult education class on (Re)Introduction to Judaism. The course for all levels of knowledge will be offered by Temple Shalom Synagogue’s Adult Education program.

Rabbi Hillel Katzir, the spiritual leader of Temple Shalom, will welcome anyone who is just curious about Judaism, anyone who might be thinking about converting to Judaism and Jews who want to restart their Jewish education.

The class begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19, and will meet for six consecutive Thursday evenings, all at Temple Shalom, 74 Bradman St.

The class is free for synagogue members; there is a $25 registration fee for nonmembers. All students are asked to obtain the text book, “To Life!” by Harold Kushner, on their own. There will also be a text on Jewish history, written by Rabbi Katzir, available for purchase at the first meeting of the class.

Grange seeks talented people

POLAND — Excelsior Grange in Poland is sponsoring its fourth annual amateur talent contest and is seeking contestants. There will be two age categories, youths from 4 to 15 and adults over 16. The contest will be held Saturday, April 28, at 7 p.m. at the Grange Hall on Harris Hill Road.

Each category will have two monetary prizes, $100 for first place and $50 for second place. The audience will also choose one act as the Peoples Choice Award, which has a prize of $50.

All forms of general audience entertainment are encouraged to enter. Preregistration is required. The deadline to enter is April 21.

Audience admission will be $3 for adults, with children under 12 free. Anyone wishing to enter the contest can request an entry form or more information by calling 998-2301 or emailing sverrill@roadrunner.com. Entry forms will also be available at local schools.

Father-Daughter ball in Turner

TURNER — The Father-Daughter Spring Fling Ball will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 28, in the Leavitt Area High School cafeteria.

The ball benefits the Leavitt High School Baseball and Competition Cheer Boosters and River Valley Hornets Cheering. This is not an RSU 52 sponsored event.

Daughters from K-8 and their father or father figure (grandfather, uncle, etc.) will enjoy a very memorable evening out together dancing the night away. Tickets are $35 per couple and $5 for each additional child per family. Only a limited number of tickets will be sold and the tickets are nonrefundable.

LEWISTON — The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA is holding open registration for session five of the 2011-12 Youth Swim Lesson Program for children ages six months and up. The session runs from April 30 through June 23.

The YMCA offers the following 30-minute swim lesson classes for children 6 months to age 5: Parent & Tot (6 months to 3 years); Water Babies (18-36 months); Tiny Tot Classes (2-5 years), where beginner and advanced classes are offered.
