100 years ago, 1912
Cries of a man in distress attracted several Lewiston police officers about 1:15 o’clock Tuesday morning, and they ran to the Lincoln Street bridge to find a man struggling in the waters of the upper cross canal. The officers were unable to rescue the man and he was drowned. His cries were heard in the stillness of the night for nearly a quarter of a mile.

The head majorette, Patricia Collins, is holding the trophy. Declaring “Everybody is a suspect,” Sgt. Barry Norris of the state fire marshall’s office said investigators plan to interview the first people who arrived at the scene of Thursday’s fire at Lewiston Raceway which killed 14 horses and caused more than $100,000 of damage.
“The fire was set, Norris said of the pre-dawn blaze that ripped through a two-story barn measuring 75 feet by 35 feet.
