PELHAM, N.H. — Ronald A. Schutt, 81, of Pelham, N.H., formerly of Chelmsford, Mass., died Tuesday, April 17, at his home. He was the beloved husband of Elisabeth C. “Betsy” (Colby) Tyrol and of the late Ione P. (Shaw) Schutt, who died June 15, 1995.

He was born in Lewiston, June 15, 1930, the son of the late Alex and the late Audrey (Libby) Schutt. He was a graduate of Lisbon High School in Lisbon, Class of 1948. He then went on to graduate from the University of Maine in Orono, earning a bachelor’s degree in engineering/physics in the Class of 1952.

Eager to further his education, Ron continued at U-Maine and earned a master’s degree in education in the class of 1956, and then graduated from Brown University in Providence, R.I., with a master’s degree in science and mathematics in the class of 1960.

While still studying at U-Maine and Brown, Mr. Schutt was also employed as a mathematics and science teacher at South Paris High School in Maine from 1954 to 1959. He then taught at Lexington High School in Lexington, Mass., from 1960 to 1972, at which time he became head of the Mathematics Department, until his retirement in 1992.

From 1968 until 1974, Mr. Schutt served on the board of directors of the Massachusetts Teacher’s Association. He then served on the board of directors of the National Education Association from 1975 to 1981. He also served as president of the Five Kezar Ponds Association in Stoneham, from 1988 to 1995. In 1995, he became chair of the water quality committee and served in that capacity until the present. A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Besides his wife, Betsy, Ron is survived by four sons, Peter A. Schutt and his wife, Robin, of Milford, Conn., David A. Schutt and his wife, Tammy, of the Philippines, Timothy A. Schutt and his wife, Donna, of Westford, Mass., and Michael B. Schutt and his wife, Stephanie, of West Newbury, Mass.; 11 grandchildren, Joel, Ryan, Sheri, Aaron, Jessica, Robert, Hannah, Robyn, Heidi, Tyler and Carissa; and two great-grandchildren, Brayden and Riley.
