LEWISTOn — On Saturday, April 28, the YWCA of Central Maine will join more than 200 YWCA’s nationwide in taking a “Stand Against Racism.” Stand Against Racism is a movement of the YWCA that aims to eliminate racism by raising awareness through its annual event.

Alyse Bigger, Bates College senior, has organized the event at the YWCA, 130 East Ave., which begins at 10 a.m. Registration begins at 9:45. A light breakfast will be offered followed by two keynote speakers, Sarah Davis, a Bates College alumna, and Dr. Joyce Gibson, dean of USM – L/A campus.

Following the addresses at 11 a.m., participants will walk to the James B. Longley Memorial Bridge, where in a show of unity will hold hands across the bridge linking the communities of Lewiston and Auburn. In the afternoon, lunch will be provided at the YWCA along with a dance workshop by Rachel Boggia, dance professor at Bates College.

The event is free and open to the public. The first 60 registrants will receive Stand Against Racism T-shirts. The event is being sponsored by the YWCA of Central Maine, Bates College Women of Color and the Harward Center at Bates College.
