Kendra Lobley’s lengthy list of rookie season accomplishments — documented in this space earlier this month — grew longer and more impressive this past week.

The Poland Regional High School product was named most outstanding female freshman track and field performer by the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Lobley, a distance runner at Division I Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., won league championships in the 5,000-meter run and the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She broke the school record in the latter event, which is not contested at the high school level.

“She’s had an amazing freshman campaign in every way,” Lipscomb head coach Bill Taylor said in a press release. “I was hoping she would get that honor. I felt like she deserved it. Apparently, the other coaches in the conference felt that way too. That was a pretty extraordinary double for her at conference. She’s had a freshman of the year-type season and we’re very proud of her.”

The steeplechase mark is the third school record of Lobley’s young career. She is also the Bisons’ all-time best at 3,000 meters and 5 kilometers.

Lobley ranks 37th in the East regional and 64th in the nation in steeplechase. Her times in the steeplechase and 5,000 rank among the top 10 for all freshmen in the East.

“She’s by far the most advanced freshman I’ve ever coached,” Taylor said. “She’s got a load of talent. We take the credit for the system, the coaching and the team, but Kendra has figured things out as far as maturity and race tactics. She deserves credit for developing herself mentally.”

SHE STEERED THE SHIP

Maine Maritime Academy softball standout Sabrina Keach of Chesterville has been named to the North Atlantic Conference second team.

Keach, a Mt. Blue High School graduate, led the Mariners with a .434 average. She cranked five doubles, two triples and two home runs while batting in the No. 5 slot. Keach crossed the plate 27 times and amassed 21 RBIs.

At first base, Keach handled 183 opportunities and chalked up a .967 fielding percentage.

Keach’s high school teammate, Kaitlyn Bartlett, made the second team as a junior utility player for the University of Maine at Farmington.

FAMILY DAY

Twin sisters Kristi and Kelsie Hilton of Monmouth went head-to-head when Kristi and Thomas College collided with Kelsie and Maine Maritime in the NAC softball quarterfinals.

Kristi’s Terriers scored four runs in the first inning en route to a 6-3 victory. Kelsie scored two of the three runs in the losing cause for the Mariners.

LIKE A BROKEN RECORD

Another big stage, another huge day and another Bates College track and field record for David Pless.

Pless, a junior and a two-time national champion in the indoor weight throw, smashed the Bobcats’ school standard in the discus Friday at the Penn Relays.

He finished eighth in the event with a top throw of 171 feet, five inches.

No other Division III athlete was selected to compete in the championship flight of both the discus and shot put at the historic annual showcase. Pless placed 12th in the shot put, a discipline in which he is also Bates’ all-time top performer.

Pless broke the previous discus best of Nat Wheatley, a 1991 graduate, by more than two feet.

There was little time for Pless to celebrate his latest achievement. He was back in action Saturday at home, where Bates hosted the NESCAC championship meet.

DOUBLE MILESTONE

Lewiston’s Ben Landry padded two of his Husson University men’s lacrosse records in nice, round fashion Saturday.

Landry scored three goals in Husson’s 14-1 NAC quarterfinal win over Lyndon State. His third goal was the 200th of his career.

With two assists and five total points, Landry also topped 250 career points.

Husson posted its 11th win of the season, another school record.
