100 years ago, 1912
A tract of land nearly three miles wide and five miles long has been burned over in the eastern section of Lewiston and it was not until Thursday morning that the fire was considered “out.” A crew of men worked all night fighting the flames. The fire started Tuesday, but it did not gain dangerous proportions until toward noon Wednesday. Thirty or more men were sent from the city, and these worked with the farmers in the section of the fire. The fire extended from College Road to No Name Pond and above that section toward Sabatis.

Lewiston-Auburn motor vehicle inspection station operators reacted with favor this afternoon to State Police Chief Robert Marx’s indication that he will seek to change the inspection program from the present two months a year to a staggered basis throughout the year. Elwood Cook of Cook Service Station, Turner St., Auburn, said, “I think it would be a lot better. Now the inspection months are two of the year’s busiest, anyway, with spring changes and winter tune-ups.

25 years ago, 1987
The cause of a fire that destroyed an Auburn School Department bus and damaged six others during the weekend was suspicious, the department’s business manager said Sunday evening, “The first policeman on the scene said the bus door was ajar,” Jude Cyr said. “That is suspicious because they are always closed.” The fire apparently started in the front of the bus, possibly in the dashboard, he added.
