President Ronald Reagan signed an amendment to the law in 1988, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday in May.

The group, led by Pastor Justin Thacker of Praise Assembly of God Church in Rumford, joined thousands of people from around the country praying for the nation, states, towns and families.
