Lake front clean-up

NORWAY — Fourteen people braved the hatching black flies to help pick up litter and rake at Lake Pennesseewassee Park during the annual spring clean up. The volunteers represented themselves, New Balance, Cub Scout Pack 130, Don’s Redemption, Oxford Hills Boosters, Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School, Healthy Oxford Hills, Weston Chandler Funeral Home, Norway Fire Department and the Norway Recreation Commission.

Participants included Jason, Blaine, Anne and Gwen Cyr, Terry and Adrianna Twitchell, Breton Pinkham, Liz Smith, Heather and Cassidy Macissac, Kelsey Hutchins, Gene Benner and Chris Davis. The Norway Fire Department supplied water and Ari’s offered discount coupons for pizza.

The clean up was sponsored by the Norway Parks & Recreation Department as a joint effort with the Art Gouin Street Clean Up of the Town of Norway.

Ellen Benner has offered to adopt the Starbird Garden at the corner of Lake Road and Crockett Ridge Road for the summer.

American Legion breakfast

BUCKFIELD — A spring breakfast will be held from 7 to 9 a.m Saturday, May 19, at John D. Long Post 58. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12.

Cruise nights to kick off

OXFORD — The Uptown Cruizahs cruise nights will begin May 21 and be held from 6 to 8 p.m. every Monday night, weather permitting, at the Tractor Supply on Route 26.

There will be fun, food and amusement. Spectators are welcome to enjoy the sights while talking to proud owners and car enthusiasts. Anyone who owns a car of interest is invited to bring it and share with others.

The Uptown Cruizahs car club raises money throughout the year with their pie auctions, 50/50’s and other fundraisers to benefit such causes as the Veteran’s Home and Santa Visits Oxford. For more information on the club or cruise nights contact Les Wing at 890-0870.

A cappella concert

AUGUSTA — Maine-ly Harmony Chorus and the Kennebec Valley YMCA Youth Chorus will present Spring Into A Cappella Sound at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at the Vile’s Arboretum, 153 Hospital St. This musical program of barbershop-style four-part harmony will delight young and old alike, as the women’s chorus performs old favorites and the students sing Disney theme songs.

Cryptogram challenge

PARIS — Paris Public Library will host its fourth monthly Cryptogram challenge for enthusiastic word lovers and code breakers at 11 a.m. Monday, May 21.

April’s first-place winner was Helen Jackson from South Paris. Second-place winner was Beverly Kerry from Waterford.

Library annual meeting

WATERFORD — The Waterford Library Association will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at the library. Reports on the activities of the past year will be presented and trustees will be elected for the coming year.

The program will include a short presentation by board vice president and local historian Nancy Marcotte on the history of the Bear Mountain Library in South Waterford and its merger with the Knight Library to form the Waterford Library.

Julie Flynn, Maine’s Deputy Secretary of State, will attend the meeting to present the library with a 100 year certificate of achievement award.

Refreshments will be served. The meeting will be held in the newly renovated meeting room on the second floor of the library. All Waterford residents are invited.

Healthy cookout

NORWAY – The MaineHealth Learning Resource Center at Stephens Memorial Hospital will offer a Healthy Summer Cookout to be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 24. The program will meet in the Stephens Memorial Hospital Courtyard, 181 Main St.

Join chef Elton Cole and Stephens Memorial Hospital’s registered dietitian, Pat Watson, for this hands-on cooking class. Learn healthy grilling basics and how to put together tasty side dishes as well. Bring an apron and get ready to grill.

Red Hat Mommas meet

BETHEL — The Red Hat Mommas of Western Maine will meet Wednesday, May 30, at the Jolly Drayman English Pub, Route 2. Meet at 5 p.m. sharp in the Marden’s parking lot.

A head count is needed by Friday, May 26. Call Isabel at 562-4241.

The group met April 25 at LaFleur’s Restaurant with 12 ladies in attendance. A birthday was acknowledged and poems were read. Also in April, 16 ladies motored to Central Maine Culinary College for lunch.
