ORLAND, Maine — Students, parents and chaperones safely escaped a school bus in Orland after it caught fire while in motion Tuesday afternoon, police said.

After a few passengers alerted the bus driver of smoke coming from the back, the driver promptly stopped the vehicle on Front Ridge Road and evacuated everyone around 1:30 p.m., Maine State Police Trooper Benjamin Sweeney said.

“The bus driver did a good job,” the trooper said.

The Orland and Bucksport fire departments were on the scene to contain the fire, Sweeney added. A cause has not yet been determined.

The vehicle was owned by First Student School Bus Transportation Services, the trooper said.
