AUBURN — Mary Ellen Durkin, 92, formerly of 42 Hogan Road, Lewiston, died Wednesday, June 13, at Clover Manor with family by her side.

She was born in Bellina, Conty Mayo, Ireland, June 5,1920, a daughter of Thomas and Mary Loftus Durkin. She was educated in Ireland.

She lived in London during World War II, where she worked as a seamstress sewing parachutes for the war.

Mary immigrated to the United States in 1948, and lived in Chicago for 33 years. She worked for AT&T Telephone Co. and was a lifetime member of the Pioneer’s Association.

She retired to Lewiston in 1982 with her sister, Bridget and brother-in-law, Joseph Stankus, with whom she lived with until their deaths in 2008.

She enjoyed dancing in her younger years, playing cards and bingo,

crossword puzzles, and spending time with family. Mary will be remembered for “doing things her own way.”

She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Roger and Maureen LaChapelle of Lewiston, Mike and Wendy Stankus of Beverly Farms, Mass., and Brian and Denise Stankus of Burlington, Wis.; 10 grandnieces and nephews; and three great-grandnephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Bridget; and six brothers and sisters in Ireland.
