PARIS — Selectmen will discuss creating a fireworks ordinance after seeing how July 4 goes and hearing that the Police Department and Fire Department have been receiving complaints.
Town Manager Phil Tarr said police received 13 complaints as of last Thursday, and the Fire Department had two.
In most cases, Tarr said, there’s nobody around when police show up at the scene. “They seem to disappear into thin air as soon as someone’s there,” he said.
Before Selectman Sam Elliot was voted new chairman at Monday’s meeting, former Chairman Robert Kirchherr said he’d received a letter of complaint and several verbal complaints from residents upset with the use of fireworks in town.
The board asked the police and fire departments to compile information on fireworks complaints for the July 9 meeting to use as a basis for creating an ordinance. Some cities and towns, including Lewiston and Portland, have banned the use of consumer fireworks. The board could also limit fireworks use to certain days of the year.
Havoc Fireworks in Paris has been selling fireworks since late May. AAH Fireworks recently opened in West Paris.
Consumer fireworks have been legal since Jan. 1 and stores selling them have been opening around the state in recent months.
