Swim lessons offered in Oxford

OXFORD — Oxford will be signing up children for the swimming program on Wednesday, June 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. Sign-ups can also be completed at the town office.

Small children will need to be accompanied by an adult in the water. Fees are $20 for the first child, $15 second, $10 for the third.

Lessons will begin the week of July 9 and go for three weeks, ending on July 27.

TRIAD picnic for seniors

FRYEBURG — The annual Oxford County Sheriff’s Office TRIAD Senior Citizen picnic will be held on Friday, June 29, at the Fryeburg Fairgrounds beginning at 10 a.m., rain or shine.

The day will include free coffee and donuts and lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, cole slaw, ice cream, cookies, ice tea and water.

Lolalee and The Country Bandits will play dance tunes and requests.

They will also be information booths, 50/50 drawing, donation jar, door prizes, Chinese auction and a book, puzzle and fudge sale.

All proceeds will go to future events for seniors.

Volunteers sought for trail building

NORWAY — On Saturday, June 30, the Western Foothills Land Trust is holding a volunteer trail building workshop on the Trust’s Witt Swamp Preserve. There will be two sessions offered: 10 a.m. to noon, and noon to 2.

Volunteers should dress for working in woods, be prepared for bugs, wet footing, and bring work gloves, loppers, folding saws, water and a snack. World’s Fair group hosting dance

WATERFORD — The Waterford World’s Fair Association will host a dance on Saturday, June 30, at the fairgrounds at 36 Irving Green Road from 8 p.m. to midnight.

The band will be Cold Blue Steel. The charge is $10 per person and it is a BYOB dance. The snack bar will be open for light refreshments and free ice. For more information call Lisa Scribner at 890-7669.

Missionary from Brazil to speak

OXFORD — Pastor Cliff Vincent, a missionary from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, will be speaking at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, at Grace Fellowship Church.

Vincent is a native of Mechanic Falls, graduating from Edward Little High School, attended Bible college at California Baptist University in Riverside, Calif., and Washington Bible University in Lanham, Md., where he graduated in 1976. He met and married his wife, Marcia, in Brazil, and they have one daughter, Rebeca.

Vincent is a missionary out of Greater Grace World Outreach of Baltimore, Md., and has been on the mission field for numerous years. Mozambique, Africa, Swaziland, Africa, and Belo Horizonte are a few of the countries Vincent has spread the gospel to.

Patriotic Musical is July 1

WEST PARIS — The public is invited to a Patriotic Musical at West Paris Baptist Church at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 1. Veterans will be honored in the service. All are invited to attend free of charge.

The musical is presented by members of the West Paris Community choir and is directed by Jennifer Randolph.

PEP grant spurs jazz classes

NORWAY — Debi Irons will offer a weekly variant jazz class at Art Moves Dance Studio beginning Tuesday, July 3, at 10:30 a.m. The hour-long classes will run through the month of July and are part of the PEP Grant Oxford Hills has received to encourage healthy and active lifestyles.

Otisfield parade on July 4

OTISFIELD — The Otisfield Fourth of July Parade will take place on Wednesday, July 4.

All are invited to enter a float, an antique vehicle, fire truck, decorate a bike or a baby stroller or dress up and walk in the parade.

The fun will start at 7:30 a.m. with a free community breakfast at the Spurrs Corner Church. Parade lineup starts at 9 a.m. south of Spurr’s Corner Fire Station on Route 121 in Cutler’s field. Parade time is 10 a.m. and it leads to the Spurr’s Corner Fire Station.

The fun continues at the fire station following the parade with a Fourth of July red, white and blue water salute by the fire department, music, bake sale, watermelon, popsicles and water. No fireworks are permitted during the parade and town Fourth of July celebration.

Once again there will be a bake sale. Items for the bake sale may be dropped off at the Spurrs Corner Fire Station the morning of the parade. 2012 Otisfield Fourth of July T-shirts, adult and children sizes, will be available for purchase at the fire station. All proceeds are for the Otisfield Fire Association.

Waterford Library book sale July 4

WATERFORD — The Waterford Library will hold its annual book sale on Wednesday, July 4, as part of the Waterford Village Independence Day celebration. The sale will be held at the library from 8 a.m. to noon and will include a large selection of hardcover and paperback books as well as a good selection of children’s books.

The library will be open during the hours of the book sale. Hard cover books are a bargain at $2, paperbacks will be available for $1.

Book donations are welcomed prior to the sale and may be left in the library lobby at any time.

The Waterford Library is on Routes 35/37 in Waterford Flat near the old town hall on Keoka Lake.

Girl Scouts nature series

NORWAY — Girl Scouts of Maine will offer a six-week Nature Summer Series for girls in grades 2-4. The free program will run in July and August for girls in grades 2 through 4.

Girls will learn about the water cycle and the precious resource of water, enjoy the “Great Outdoors” through nature hikes, make new friends and have fun.

American Legion yard sale July 7

BUCKFIELD — A yard sale which will consist of perennial plants, food sale, raffles, steamed hot dogs, chili and strawberry shortcake will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 7, at the American Legion Hall on Route 104. This event will benefit Legion Post 58 and Auxiliary.

Casco library book sale

CASCO — The Casco Public Library’s annual summer book sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 8, Tuesday, July 10, and Thursday, July 12, at the library, Route 121, Casco Village.

Prices are from 25 cents and up. A great selection of hardcover and paperback fiction, children’s and teen books, self-help and inspiration titles, do-it-yourself, art and CDs and some nice classics. The book sale room will be open as usual year-round so check back often.

Proceeds from the sale are used to purchase books, movies and music CDs for the collection and to finance the operation of the library and is the major fundraiser to support the budget for the library each year.

Donations of any size for the sale and to help fund the library are welcome throughout the year. For more information call the library at 627-4541. Donations may be dropped off at the library whenever it is open. No old encyclopedias, old computer manuals, condensed books or anything in poor condition.

Rug hooking workshop

CASCO — The Raymond-Casco Historical Society will present a beginner folk art rug hooking workshop with Janet Conner from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, July 15, at the Raymond-Casco Historical Building, Route 302. Deadline for enrollment is July 9.

Genuine hooked rugs use wool fabric strips, not yarn, and are rich with texture and color. Like all old fashioned crafts, rug hooking is low-tech, simple and lots of fun. Every step will be demonstrated.
