KINGFIELD —  Baby boomers who yearn for the folk ballads of Peter, Paul and Mary will have the opportunity to savor a memorable voice from the trio at the 10th Anniversary Kingfield POPS concert.

The Bangor Symphony Orchestra has been bringing live music to fans since 1896 and to Kingfield since 2003. The Kingfield POPS and their Grammy-winning Music Director Lucas Richman will celebrate this 10th anniversary concert with Noel Paul Stookey on Saturday, June 30, at the Kennedy Farm. Stookey will perform a solo set and several numbers with the orchestra, playing many of his well-known tunes that have made him an American folk icon.

The POPS weekend begins at 5 p. m. Friday when local galleries, shops and museums open their doors and invite visitors to view exhibits on the POPS Friday Artwalk. Three venues also will be hosting live music that night thanks to a grant from the Maine Community Foundation, according to organizer Deb Robie.

The Gawler Family, Ellie and Andy Buckland, and Mali and Tom Obomsawin, will share their tunes around town until the Artwalk closes at 8 p. m.

Festivities continue at 9 a. m. Saturday when the Festival of the Arts gets under way. Throughout the day, fine artists and artisans display and sell their work. Media include jewelry, photography, woodworking, textiles, basketry, painting and more. Live music will be playing all day in a regional competition for soloists and combos.

Gates open at 4 p. m., and concertgoers will hear one of Maine’s hottest, young bluegrass bands, Erica Brown and the Bluegrass Connection. Nadia and Jocko will play soul and blues, and the Maranacook String Band will offer roots music. Local favorites include steel drum music from the Western Mountains Trash Can Band.

“In honor of the event’s 10th anniversary, the Kingfield POPS and the Bangor Symphony Orchestra asked Stookey to write a special composition,” Robie said.

Stookey wrote a quirky composition about life in rural Maine, and the Saturday evening audience will be the first to hear it. The BSO program complements Stookey’s sets with an all-American repertoire that presents a snapshot of American history.

“They’ll play Rodgers, Copland, Gershwin, John Williams, traditional and patriotic favorites,” Robie said.

Concert tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the gate, and free for youths 17 and younger. They are available online at www.kingfieldPOPS.com, and locally at Tranten’s Family Market in Kingfield and Farmington, and at Camden National Bank in Kingfield and Farmington.

The POPS Friday Artwalk and the Saturday Festival of the Arts are free. The nonprofit Kingfield POPS funds many of the musical offerings in SAD 58 and RSU 9 schools.
