BRUNSWICK — The Shanghai Quartet, which regularly tours major music centers in Europe, North America and Asia, will perform Friday, July 27, at Bowdoin College.

The Festival Fridays concert is part of the 2012 Bowdoin International Music Festival, which continues through Aug. 3.

Formed at the Shanghai Conservatory in 1983, the quartet has worked with some of the world’s most distinguished artists.

The quartet will perform Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 15, one of the late, great works commissioned in 1822 by the Russian prince Nicholas Galitzin, an amateur cellist. Also taking the stage will be faculty ensembles led by Renee Jolles (Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2) and Muneko Otani (Brahms’ String Quintet No. 2).

Festival Fridays concerts are at 7:30 pm in Brunswick High School’s Crooker Theater. Tickets are $40.

Monday Sonatas

The Monday Sonatas concert on July 30 will feature works by Bach, Beethoven and Ravel. Guitarist Ricardo Iznaola, a prize winner in many international competitions, will open the concert with Bach’s Suite for Lute in C Minor. Violinist Janet Sung will follow with Bach’s Sonata in C Minor, accompanied by pianist Tao Lin.

Cellist David Requiro and pianist Yong Hi Moon will then perform Beethoven’s Seven Variations in E-flat Major on the Theme Bei Mannern welche Liebe fuhlen from Mozart’s “Die Zauberflote.”

Frank Huang, former first violinist of the Ying Quartet and current concertmaster of the Houston Symphony, will close out the concert with Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Piano, accompanied by Constance Moore on piano.

Monday Sonatas concerts are at 7:30 pm in Studzinski Recital Hall on the Bowdoin College campus. Tickets are $30.

Wednesday Upbeat!

The Shanghai Quartet will open the Wednesday Upbeat! Concert on Aug. 1 with Haydn’s String Quartet in G Major, Op. 77, No. 1. A faculty ensemble will follow with Bach’s Concerto for two Violins, Strings and Continuo in D Minor. The concert will conclude with a quintet of virtuosi playing Vaughan Williams’ Piano Quintet in C Minor. 

Wednesday Upbeat! concerts are at 7:30 pm in Studzinski Recital Hall on the Bowdoin College campus. Tickets are $30.

Gamper Festival 

The Charles E. Gamper Festival has presented the works of 20th century and contemporary American composers, including the festival’s composers-in-residence, guest composers and top participants, since 1965. Concerts are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 28 and 29, in Studzinski Recital Hall.

Artists of Tomorrow 

The Artists of Tomorrow concert series, showcasing the festival’s top students, will continue during the last week of the festival. Suggested donation is $10. Other events

Composer-in-residence Samuel Adler will give a talk at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at Thornton Oaks Retirement Community. His talk, “Bach, Composer for All Time,” will address Bach’s influence on composers from 1835 to the present, with recorded and live demonstrations. Admission is free.

The festival’s final Festival’s Festival Fridays concert on Aug. 3 will present virtuoso pianist Ben Kim playing Tchaikovsky’s Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Major for Piano and Orchestra. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 and Debussy’s “Danses,” scored for harp with string quartet, will complete the program.
