BRUNSWICK — The 8th Annual Peace Fair is set for Saturday, Aug. 4, and will take place on the Green in downtown Brunswick starting at 10 a.m. This family friendly event, sponsored by Greater Brunswick PeaceWorks, is free of charge and invites participants to reflect on how we might each contribute to the creation of a more just and peaceful world.

A children’s musical parade will start things off at 10:30, followed by a number of other art activities for both the young and young at heart, including paper crane folding, dressing a doll for peace, poster-making and a poetry writing workshop led by local poets Gary Lawless and Terry Grasse. Participants will also have the opportunity to get their portrait done by local artist Charlotte Agell. Local musicians will provide the soundtrack for the event, with acoustic performances from noon to 2 p.m. by Lauryn Hottinger, Morgana Warner-Evans and Mike Patterson, followed by a plugged-in concert with Bald Hill, BroadBand and Denise Dill from 3 to 5.

In following fair tradition, two community conversations will be held. The first, at 11, will be facilitated by local students and will ask the question, “What Will a Sustainable World Look Like?” At 1, Occupy Maine – Bath/Brunswick will lead us in “Connecting the Dots” between all the many issues we are faced with as a society.

Throughout the day 30 Maine nonprofit organizations will be present to talk with you about their vision, the work they do to realize it and how you can get involved.

PeaceWorks is offering two other events free to the public as a prelude to the fair. The first is a Community Tree Planting to be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 1. A vacant lot on the corner of Mill and Cushing streets, across from the Swinging Bridge, will be planted with two pear trees and an understory of edible and medicinal herbs. The celebration will kick off with a performance by the Full Circle women’s ensemble.

On Thursday, Aug. 2, at 7 p.m., Frontier Cafe will host a public viewing of “The Welcome,” an award winning film that offers a fiercely intimate view of life after war.
