BETHEL — New England Celtic Arts will present Irish uilleann piper Cillian Vallely and guitarist/vocalist Ryan McGiver in concert at Bingham Hall on Tuesday, Aug. 14.
The duo will also perform at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in Carthage on Wednesday, Aug. 15; and at UCCPA in Unity on Thursday, Aug. 16. Curtain is 7 p.m. at Bethel through the Mahoosuc Arts Council and at Skye Theatre.; 7:30 p.m. at UCCPA.
Vallely, a native of County Armagh in Northern Ireland, has established his name over the last decade through his playing with the award-winning, traditional Irish supergroup Lunasa.
Influenced by the rhythmic, flowing style of Paddy Keenan and Johnny Doran, Vallely’s mastery of chanter, drones and regulators has earned him a reputation as one of the top players in the tradition.
He has performed worldwide on tours as diverse as Riverdance, Natalie Merchant, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Tim O Brien and the Celtic Jazz Collective with Miles Davis’ drummer, Lewis Nash, and bassist Peter Washington.
Vallely has also recorded on more than 40 albums, including six with Lunasa; “Callan Bridge” with his brother, Niall; “On Common Ground” with Kevin Crawford; various guest spots with Natalie Merchant; and “Excalibur” with Fairport Convention and Moody Blues.
“Vallely, whose family has played a seminal role in piping and Irish music in the north of Ireland for years, shows why he is one of the most respected pipers playing today,” states a reviewer with Irish Voice.
McGiver, who is from Upstate New York, is a sought-after accompanist on both sides of the Atlantic. He is regarded as one of the best of his generation, playing Irish and American traditional music with equal facility.
He has toured in America, Europe and Asia, and shared stages with such performers as Susan McKeown, fiddlers Liz and Yvonne Kane, and concertina player Padraig Rynne.
McGiver’s recently released debut album, “Troubled in Mind,” is an Indie-folk record with imaginative musical interpretations of old Appalachian ballads.
