Litchfield church yard sale

LITCHFIELD — An indoor “whatever” yard sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 17 and 18, at Litchfield Community Christian Church.

There will be items for men, women, boys and girls. “Whatever” you find will cost “whatever” you want to give. Enter at rear, lower level.

Marshwood plans carnival

LEWISTON — Marshwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, on 33 Roger St., will hold a carnival from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24. The carnival, for center residents, staff and families, will have an intergenerational theme and is a great photo opportunity.

The events will be primarily held outside and will include bean bag toss, can pyramid game, spinner game, ducky pool, sand art, photo booth, tattoos, face painting, balloons, balloon splash, cotton candy booth, hot dogs, popcorn stand and a bubbles stand. Scheduled events include a pie eating contest at 2 p.m., cupcake wars at 3:30 (judges needed), treasure dig at 3 and pony rides from 2 to 4 p.m. Kora clowns are expected to be in attendance as well.

Native American market, demo

NEW GLOUCESTER — The Maine Native American Summer Market and Demonstration will be held rain or shine at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26, on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Admission and parking are free.

The event will include hand woven ash splint and sweetgrass baskets, traditional etched birch bark vessels, stone sculptures, woodcarvings, cedar flutes, jewelry, traditional story telling and demonstrations. The 20 featured Maine Native Americans are among the finest and most renowned artists representing the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac and Maliseet tribes.

Of special note is Molly Neptune Parker, the 2012 National Heritage Fellowship winner.  First time appearances will be made by Penobscot Nation’s Burnurwurbskek Singers and the Passamaquoddy Sipayik Dance Troupe.

Community blood drive

WINTHROP — There will be a Community Blood Drive at St. Francis Xavier Parish Hall on Route 133 on Thursday, Aug. 30, from 1 to 6 p.m.

Knights suppers to resume

LEWISTON — The Holy Cross Knights of Columbus Council 12,652 has announced that the monthly bean suppers will resume on the first Saturday of each month beginning Sept. 1 and run through May 4.

The suppers are held in the Holy Cross Church Hall from 4 to 6 p.m. Cost is $7 for adults, $4 kids ages 5 to 12.

YMCA swim registration

AUBURN — The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA announces registration for Session 1 of their 2012-13 Youth Swim Lesson Program for ages 6 months and up. Session 1 runs from Sept. 4 through Oct. 27.

The YMCA offers the following 30-minute swim lesson classes for children 6 months to age 5: Parent & Tot (6 months to 3 years); Water Babies (18-36 months); Tiny Tot Classes (2-5 years); and Levels 1-4 for kids ages 6-12. The purpose of the Y Swim Lessons Program is to develop competency in swimming, along with confidence and endurance. A child is advanced to the next level only when he or she can proficiently and safely perform the skills within his or her level.
