College Fair on Sept. 25

BRUNSWICK — The Mid-Coast College Fair will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.  Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Brunswick High School. The BHS Counseling Department is hosting the fair.

The list of colleges attending can be accessed at www.brunswick.k12.me.us/bhs/. More than 100 colleges will be represented. Students of all grades and their parents are invited to meet with representatives and gather information from various colleges.

The fair is open to the public. For more information contact the Brunswick High School Counseling Office at 319-1912. Refreshments will be available.

Master Gardener Volunteers program

AUGUSTA — University of Maine Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteers program for Kennebec and Waldo Counties is now open for application.

The program provides participants with more than 40 hours of in-depth training in the art and science of horticulture. In addition, the program trains volunteers to conduct and join sustainable horticulture projects in Kennebec and Waldo Counties.

Trainees receive the latest research-based information from UMaine Extension educators and industry experts. This coming program will focus on ornamentals and will be on most Tuesdays and Thursdays from Oct. 23 through mid-December. Most classes will be held at Longfellow’s Greenhouse, Manchester, from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Participants must attend two of three tours held at other area sites in spring of 2013 and pass a written exam. To complete the course, participants must volunteer a minimum of 40 hours at approved community projects the first year.

Workshops for pro artists

PORTLAND — Creative Portland has received a grant from the Quimby Family Foundation to launch a professional development series, in partnership with Maine College of Art and the Maine Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, designed specifically for professional artists.

The series will consist of 12 workshops held in MECA’s Osher Hall on the second Wednesday of every month from 6 to 9 p.m., beginning in October. Selected from a survey of artists this summer, topics will range from grant-writing and social media to contract law and business start-up basics. On October 10, the inaugural session will cover the top-rated need identified on the survey, grant-writing skills for artists.

The cost will be $10 per session and free to all MECA students and alumni. Registration is required at portlandarts.org.

Save Your Breath Walk

AUGUSTA — The Lung Cancer Free Alliance’s mission is to decrease the suffering caused by a diagnosis of lung cancer by raising much needed money for lung cancer research, education and community support.

On Nov. 3 the alliance will hold the first Save Your Breath Walk at Buker School, 21 Armory St. This event will include a walk, ceremony, silent auction, refreshments and awards for the person who raises the most money.

Doors open at 8:45, ceremony at 10:15, walk 10:30. Refreshments, silent auction results and awards 11:30.

Online registration closes on Oct. 20. Online registration is $18. Mail-in registration is $20. Event day registration is $22. Register at www.lungcancefreealliance.org.
