AUGUSTA — Registration is open for the first “Rachel’s Run and Kids’ Fun,” slated in Augusta on Saturday, Sept. 29, in Capitol Park. The fun, family event begins with a 5K run or walk along the Kennebec River Rail Trail, and includes a kids’ obstacle course, nature-related games, refreshments, prizes and more.

Strollers are welcome to join the stroller brigade led by Hannah Pingree, former Speaker of the House and a committed advocate for a toxic-free Maine. Every cent raised will be used to reduce harmful toxic pollution in Maine.

The event celebrates the publication of Rachel Carson’s book, “Silent Spring,” 50 years ago this September. The book first publicized the effects of dangerous chemicals on the environment, especially on birds.

The 5K walk or run will kick off at 9 a.m. and the kids’ fun run at 10 a.m. Registration for the 5K begins at 8.

Race registration fee is $20, $5 for kids’ fun run obstacle course. Participants are encouraged to raise funds from their family, friends and colleagues.

The race will be chip timed. Top finishers will receive gift certificates to Lamey Wellehan. Prizes also go to the top fundraisers. All who raise $100 or more will receive a locally-made, organic, event T-shirt.
