FARMINGTON — A week after passing its first test of the season at Gardiner, Mt. Blue returned home Friday night to cram for next week’s major exam against Leavitt.
Oceanside played the role of the Cougars’ study partner, but not for long. Mt. Blue scored three touchdowns in the first five minutes and cruised to a 42-0 victory on a drizzly Friday night at Kemp Field.
Jordan Whitney threw for 200 yards and three touchdowns in about two-and-a-half quarters as the unbeaten Cougars tuned up for next week’s highly-anticipated PTC Class B championship rematch with Leavitt, which goes into Saturday’s game against Waterville undefeated.
“We improved,” Whitney said. “This week was more of working on our assignments, getting out blocks down, (running back) Bradley Jackson picking up linebackers coming through so I could throw the ball.”
For the most part, the Cougars (5-0) did just that, protecting Whitney so he could complete 12 of 19 passes. Senior slot/running back Chad Luker still sees room for improvement, however.
“We didn’t have a very good offensive line game against Gardiner (in a 21-16 win) and still in this game,” said Luker, who caught two of Whitney’s three TD tosses. “That’s what we’re going to have to pick up against Leavitt.”
Whitney had all the time he needed to go over the top to a single-covered Luker on the Cougars’ first play from scrimmage for a 49-yard touchdown.
“(Whitney) led me pretty good,” Luker said. “He read it perfectly. (The defensive back) came up on me and I just ran right past him. Jordan and I kind of made eye contact before the play and we pretty much knew (to go deep).”
Three plays into Oceanside’s second possession, Nick Hyde picked off QB Sam Meklin and raced 57 yards down the home sideline to make it 14-0.
Oceanside (2-3) fumbled the ensuing kickoff, which Mt. Blue’s Kindle Bonsall recovered at the Mariners’ 25. After a 19-yard run by Calan Lucas (six carries, 98 yards, TD), Whitney found Luker over the middle for a 6-yard TD pass and the rout was on.
Lucas made it 28-0 midway through the second quarter with a 48-yard TD run. Cam Abbott’s interception, his first of two on the night, thwarted Oceanside’s deepest drive into Cougar territory at their 10-yard line with 2:02 left.
Whitney executed the two-minute drill efficiently from there, driving 90 yards in nine plays. The drive culminated with Whitney, while getting dragged down from behind, firing a high pass into the end zone to a leaping Abbott for a 1-yard score that made it 35-0 seven seconds before intermission.
“We really stepped it up,” Whitney said. “We were playing a little flat. When the two minute drill came, Coach said we had to turn it on. We blocked well and put the ball in the end zone. I was getting pulled down and I knew Abbott would pull it down for me.”
“It’s the second time we got to do (the two minute drill) this year and we’ve scored twice,” Mt. Blue coach Gary Parlin said. “We’ve got the perfect quarterback for the two minute drill.”
The Cougars needed only two plays to extend their lead at the start of the second half. A 36-yard Whitney pass to Zak Kendall set up a 34-yard TD run by Jackson.
Mt. Blue held Oceanside to 57 total yards of offense, including -3 yards passing.
“The first couple of games we had, the first guy that got to the ball made the tackle,” Parlin said. “We tried to tell them all week the first guy that gets there is going to need some help. We were hoping that we’d have a little more team tackling. I thought we swarmed to the ball a lot better this week. Obviously, we’ve got to team tackle next week against Leavitt.”
