Evergreen boughs needed for cats

GREENE — In caring for feral cats, Tommy’s Feral Feline Friends builds their own houses and cafes and insulate them with spruce or fir boughs to keep the cats warm during the harsh winter months.

Weight loss surgery program

LEWISTON — Central Maine Bariatric Surgery will host an informational program about weight loss surgery on Wednesday, Oct. 3, and again on Monday, Oct. 22.

The presentation will feature bariatric surgeons and other members of the bariatric surgery program’s professional staff. They will provide a general overview of obesity and weight loss surgery options. The program will include a question and answer session.

The Oct. 3 live program will be held at Central Maine Medical Center and simultaneously videoconferenced to Topsham Family Medicine. The Oct. 22 program at CMMC will not be videoconferenced.

The live event at CMMC will be held in the Chairmen’s Rooms on the lower level of the 12 High Street Medical Office Building. Preregistration is not required for the Lewiston event. Those wishing to register for the videoconference in Topsham should call Central Maine Bariatric Surgery at 795-5710.

The presentation begins at 6 p.m. and concludes about 8 p.m. Seating at the event is limited, so early registration is advised. There is no charge for participation.

Cribbage results

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Senior Citizens Cribbage League winners at the Lewiston Memorial Armory on Sept. 27 were: first place, Ron Hynes 3 Player Table; second, Trudy Faunce and Louise Carey; third, Doris Gosselin and Bert Belanger; fourth, Monique Nadeau and Mike Martin; fifth, Roberta Greenlaw and Bert Chenard.

Historical Society changes dates, hours

POLAND — The Poland Historical Society one-room schoolhouse will be open for public viewing every first Thursday of each month, weather permitting, from 1 to 4 p.m. starting Oct. 4 and continuing though May. There will be a member of the society to help visitors, answer questions and provide tours.

Poland Historical Society monthly meeting dates have changed. They will be opened every three months instead of monthly until further notice. The next meeting will be the annual meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3. The public is invited. For more information call 998-4391.

Girl Scouts information

TURNER — Girl Scouts of Maine will host a parent information and registration meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at Turner Primary School, 59 Cobb Road.

Girls and adults are invited to attend the meeting to find out about the many different and fun ways today’s girls are participating in Girl Scouting and how the programs and activities inspire them to reach their personal best. Participants will also learn about the flexible options and benefits of becoming a Girl Scout volunteer.

Legion Auxiliary fair is Oct. 6

AUBURN — American Legion Woman’s Auxiliary Post 153 will hold its second Vendor Fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at 71 South Main St.

There will be a bake sale, raffles, silent auction and more than 20 local vendors.

The group will also feature its own tacos in a bag. There will be a raffle for $10 per chance for a hot air balloon ride for two.

Members will also host a breast cancer awareness table this year. There will be pink baked goods and lots of pink items for sale.

Retired educators to meet Oct. 10

AUBURN — The October meeting of the Androscoggin Retired Educators will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the Park Avenue Methodist Church.

This is the annual scholarship auction. Each member is asked to bring items such as baked goods, fudge, pumpkins, gourds, books, antiques, crafts, gift certificates, gift baskets, etc. Try to have donations to the church by 9:45 a.m.

A pasta buffet will be served by Gladys Chapman and her committee. The cost of lunch is $10. Send lunch reservations to Pat and George Jacobs, 4 Sprague’s Mill Road, Greene, ME 04236 by Oct. 6.

All retired educators are welcome to attend; a person need not have taught in Androscoggin County or even Maine.

Historical Society events in October

NEW GLOUCESTER — The New Gloucester Historical Society is sponsoring three events in the month of October.

On Oct. 6, the monthly New Gloucester History Barn Open House will take place from 9 a.m. to noon behind the Town Hall on Route 231.

On Oct. 18, the monthly program meeting will discuss “The Sadness of Malaga Island, Maine, and Its Ties to New Gloucester,” at 7 p.m. at the New Gloucester Meetinghouse, 389 Intervale Road.

On Oct. 27, a field trip to the Maine State Museum and the exhibit about Malaga Island will take place.

Pickwick Club reading ‘Two Cities’

Book signing of ‘Aurore’ on Oct. 9

AUBURN — Marguerite Roy of Auburn will discuss her book, “Aurore: My Franco-American Mother,” at a book signing at the Auburn Public Library on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 2 p.m.

The memoir, recently published, is a story of her mother’s life from birth to her last days at age 84. The book has received favorable reviews among the many Lewiston-Auburn readers and requests for another book signing have led to her speaking engagement at the library.

Aurore, the youngest of her mother’s nine children, lost her mother at 2 years old and carried this heartache throughout her life. Aurore herself had nine children and became the mother she never had, devoting her life to them. In 1961, she was named “Mother of the Year” by the Ladies of St. Anne of Holy Cross Church.

Fire Safety Open House

AUBURN — The Auburn Fire Department is holding a Fire Safety Open House at Auburn Fire Dept., 550 Minot Ave., from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.

October is National Fire Prevention Month, and Papa Gino’s is teaming up with local fire departments to help educate the community on fire safety and prevention. For the past 18 years, New England fire departments and Papa Gino’s have helped more than 2 million people by supplying educational materials and free pizza at fire safety open houses.

Some of the exciting visuals include firefighters demonstrating the way to escape a smoke-filled room, cooking safety tips, fire prevention tips and Sparky, the fire safety mascot, interacting with the children.

Parenting of ages 1-4

LEWISTON — A three-week class for parents of children ages 1 to 4 titled “1, 2, 3, 4 Parents” will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 15, 22 and 29, at Advocates for Children, 57 Birch St.

Topics will include stages of development, appropriate expectations and positive guidance strategies. Nancy Reynolds will be the facilitator.
