Program for medical staff

AUBURN — A two-day course on “Medical Preparedness and Response to Bombing Incidents” will take place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, and Wednesday, Oct. 10, Fireside Inn and Suites, 1777 Washington St.

The program is being hosted by Central Maine Regional Resource Center and presented by Texas Engineering & Extension Service for pre-hospital and hospital-based emergency care providers from throughout Maine.

The course will address medical preparedness for and response to blast effects. Topics include identification of targets, explosives characteristics, pre-attack indicators, pre- and post-detonationresponse, bombing injuries, security and resource management.

Danville Grange to meet Oct. 11

AUBURN — Danville Junction Grange will hold a meeting at the hall on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. The program will be presented by Dana Coffin, chairman of the Legislative Committee. Refreshments will be served at the close of the meeting. All members and guests are welcome.

Health is topic of WLU meetings

AUBURN — “Healthy Happy Hour” will be the topic for the Woman’s Literary Union October meetings. Meetings will be held at the WLU clubhouse, the former Foss Mansion, 19 Elm St., at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, and at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, followed by refreshments.

Susan A. Tilley of Norway, area manager and independent consultant for Arbonne, International will be the featured speaker. She will speak of the connection between food and aging, what causes cravings, unwanted weight gain and aging skin. She’ll explain how to make healthy and safe food choices that will result in increased energy, better memory, clearer thinking, better sleep and weight loss. Despite what TV boasts about its ads WLU members will learn what food in diets could be harmful rather than helpful.

As part of the 2012-13 program the WLU will be making monthly donations of items to local charities. For the October meetings members and guests are asked to bring diapers and/or wipes that will be donated to the Head Start program. Also, coats for children and adults will be collected throughout the fall and a charity will be selected to receive the items.

Dinner, auction benefits football, Y

LEWISTON — A spaghetti dinner and silent auction will be held Friday, Oct. 12, at Lewiston Middle School.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served from 6 to 7 p.m. Silent auction runs until 8 p.m.

Tickets are $5. Proceeds will benefit Blue Demons Football and YWCA.

Dempsey Center open house

LEWISTON — Following three months of construction, the new Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing will host an open house in its new location, 29 Lowell St., on Friday, Oct. 12, from 2 to 6 p.m.

The center occupies the entire fifth floor of the Central Maine Medical Center-owned building and provides free support, education and integrative medicine services to anyone impacted by cancer, regardless of where treatment is received.

The move addresses a number of concerns including patient privacy, a single location in which to offer services and to accommodate the growing number of cancer patients, survivors and caregivers utilizing the services. The center totaled 11,488 patient contacts in 2011 and receives most of its funding through the annual Dempsey Challenge.

In response to his mother’s multiple bouts with ovarian cancer, actor and Maine native Patrick Dempsey founded the Dempsey Center in March 2008. For more than three years the center was located on the CMMC campus at 10 High St.

Commercial Travelers meeting Oct. 13

MECHANIC FALLS — Twin City Council 160 of the United Commercial Travelers of America will hold a meeting on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 5 p.m. at Bucknam Oaks. A potluck dinner will be served at the close of the meeting. All members and guests are invited.

DAR chapter meets Oct. 13

SABATTUS — Burnt Meadow Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, will meet on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 1:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Corley Byras.

The Regent will give a brief report of the Fall State Conference on Sept. 29 in Saco including the status of the DAR’s Library Lay Light and the Battle of New Orleans in 1812. Information will be passed on from the State Fall Meeting to chairmen of committees.

Members will be discussing plans for the future and the budget. A silent auction of items brought by the members will help replenish the treasury.

The program will be based on a display of presidential campaign buttons from 1891 through 1996. A general discussion of the items and past campaigns will ensue.
