FARMINGTON — On Saturday, Nov. 3, Nordica Auditorium will ring with the sounds of bluegrass as the Sandy River Ramblers and Maranacook String Band showcase their new repertoire of original songs about Maine.

Nationally known songwriter Stan Keach, whose group is the Sandy River Ramblers, recently released a CD, “Cry of the Loon,” with 14 original songs about Maine.

Keach’s songs have recorded by some of the biggest names in bluegrass, but, he said, “This collection, which I?ve been working on for 30 years, is my real labor of love as a songwriter.”

The Maranacook String Band, a group of mostly teenagers, was started at Maranacook Community High School, where Keach taught for 23 years. The string band’s lead singers are Julie Churchil, 18, and Lee Stetson, 16. Banjoist Megan Dood and bassist Zach Greenham anchor the band.

Fellow members of the Sandy River Ramblers, which has been a staple of the Maine Bluegrass scene since 1985, are Liz Keachon upright bass and Bud Godsoe on banjo. Guitarist Keach and mandolin player Dan Simons, a Maranacook High School alumni, are in both bands.

Also performing at the 7 p.m. concert will be local ?ddle prodigy Silas Rogers. Admission is $8. Food and refreshments will be sold by the Farmington Emblem Club, which puts on the series of bluegrass concerts at Nordica Auditorium on the University of Maine at Farmington campus.
