AUBURN — Four students at Edward Little High School were caught either selling or buying brownies laced with marijuana.

Three were issued summonses for possession, after they were caught at the school with the brownies. The fourth faces a charge of aggravated trafficking.

“The purchases didn’t happen at the school,” said Jason Moen, Auburn’s deputy police chief. However, they were close enough to escalate the crime from a misdemeanor to a felony.

Drug sales within 1,000 feet of a school or in a school bus become automatic felonies, according to Maine statute.

The case began after students reported the problem to Officer Shawn Carll, the student resource officer at the high school, Moen said. Carll investigated.

Summonses were issued Monday. Police have released no details about the four students.

However, Moen insisted that the discovery was not part of a bigger problem.

“It’s an isolated case,” Moen said.
