LIVERMORE — Selectpersons approved three tax abatements recently on three properties including the Oriental Star Lodge No. 21, administrative assistant Kurt Schaub said Thursday.
The board approved a tax abatement for the Leadbetter parcel adjacent to the town’s Memorial Forest on Oct. 22. The family was assessed for 68 acres for years when their actual acreage was 10.5 acres, which was determined during the recent survey of the town’s property line, Schaub said. The taxes assessed were previously $297.96 and are now $46.15, he said.
Selectpersons also approved a tax abatement for the Oriental Star Lodge. The lodge, which now owns the former Methodist Church building on Church Street, had not submitted an application to be considered tax exempt prior to April 1.
When the tax bills were sent out, one of the members questioned why the lodge received a bill, Schaub said.
The lodge is part of the Mason organization and under state law is entitled to an exemption from taxes as a fraternal lodge, though they must submit an application prior to April 1 to obtain one, he said.
The application was not submitted until the issuance of the tax bill.
Selectpersons had the option of having the lodge pay the bill, or grant the abatement as if the application was submitted on time.
Selectpersons agreed to abate the tax bill of $1,373.59. The lodge will no longer receive a property tax bill, Schaub said.
The third abatement involved less than $100 worth of personal property that was owned by CITI Financial. Ownership to the property was transferred several years ago and the town’s records did not reflect it, Schaub said.
