Over $1,700 worth of fur goods and $17 in cash were stolen sometime Sunday night from the store of Abbott Brothers at 184 Lisbon St., Lewiston. It was the biggest haul made by burglars in this city for some time. As the burglars took only the best quality of fur goods, and the large quantity was removed from the building without detection, the police and Messrs. Abbott believe that it was the work of professionals. A little glass door, high in the wall and only a short distance from the front of the fur department, was part way open and this told the story of how the burglars had gained entrance. Beneath the glass is an old door which was sheathed over a few years ago. The door formerly led to a barber shop. In order to reach the transom, the thieves had only to enter by the main stairs leading to Odd Fellows’ Hall and thus reach the second story.

Work was completed today on the new 300-watt, two-way radio system at the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department. The new radio transmitter has enough reserve power, it was proven in a test for effectiveness this morning, that it reached all but three of the state’s 16 counties. Three of the all-transistor portable units have been installed in the department’s cruisers.

(Editorial) Some voters were on the ball when they questioned the propriety of using a recreation center in Lewiston for a polling place when it bears a candidate’s name on the facade. In Lewiston’s 2nd Precinct of Ward 6, one of the decision’s voters will make is between 19-term incumbent Paul A. Couture and the first-time challenger Jerry DerBoghosian, who are running for a City Council seat. But Couture may hold a distinct advantage because his name is displayed prominently on the front of the building where voters will step into the booths.
