DEAR SUN SPOTS: In my senior year in 1942 I learned a song in a play that is right for today. Can you locate the official lyrics and the history?

“The Union Jack means England, Rising Sun means old Japan, while France, Spain and Holland have their banners everyone.

“While Italy and German are handsome as the rest, but still of course Old Glory is the one that I love best.

“The stars in Old Glory are famous in story; the bright stars and bright bars, they never shall fail. On mainland or ocean we give our devotion, Dear Flag of Our United States, we hail, we hail.”

Thank you and God Bless. — Anthony Martin, Dixfield, age 88

ANSWER: Sun Spots tried searching using the various lyrics Anthony provided but had no luck. Do any readers remember the actual name of the song or the play it was in?

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I would like to see if there is anywhere in Maine I could buy a good quality mahjong set. I play online but would really like to play with a real set. Thank you for your help. — No Name, Lisbon

ANSWER: Sun Spots doesn’t have any special source, but perhaps someone will write in and let her know of a local source, or want to sell a set they have. According to an online search, the game is available at stores such as Walmart, where it sells for $79.94. That sounds like a lot, but that is the best price Sun Spots found. Some of the games sold online go for hundreds of dollars.

One thing you will want to watch out for is whether you are buying the American or Asian version. Apparently they are quite different. At Wikipedia.com it says most players in this country are used to the Americanized version and that’s what they play online.

The one advertised at Walmart.com says it is the American version.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I teach kindergarten and have the game Marbleworks from Discovery Toys. Some of the parts have gotten broken, including the handle on the crank-it-up part.

I emailed the company but never got a response, so I called them. They told me to contact my local representative. Are there any representatives in the Farmington are who could tell me if these parts are guaranteed?

My students love this game. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. — Margaret Huff, Phillips

ANSWER: Sun Spots does not know of any local representatives. According to what she found online, it is a home-based business like Avon, so if there is a representative locally, hopefully they will let Sun Spots know.

Also, at Amazon.com they list the crank-it-up part for $15.99. Sun Spots can’t be sure it’s the one you want, but it might be worth checking it out. It seems unlikely that the toys would be guaranteed, of if so, the warranty would have a short time limit.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am looking for someone who has knowledge of furs in order to identify a fur coat that I have. I was told it’s a mink coat, but I am not sure.

Furriers are almost nonexistent in Maine. Any help from readers would be appreciated. — Dolly Grondin, dollyvg2002@yahoo.com

ANSWER: You could try going online and looking at different photos of furs. Or maybe someone who traps will be able to help you.

While fur coats are no longer popular in the United States, in many other parts of the world they are still a status symbol. You might be able to sell your coat on eBay internationally.
