AUGUSTA — Once again this year the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 9 Summer St., will host the highly respected Mount View Chamber Singers from Thorndike as they present “Carols in the Round 2012” on Sunday, Nov. 25. The candlelit program will start at 4 p.m., followed by an informal reception with director David Stevenson and the 20 high school singers.
Despite their youth, the musicians present an impressively mature program, composed of sophisticated arrangements of both familiar and less-known compositions for four parts. Rather than standing on a stage, the performers surround the audience and smoothly move from one position to another between selections, providing the opportunity for those in attendance to see and hear all of the singers.
Students aspire to be admitted to the Chamber Singers, and the membership changes each year as seniors move on and underclassmen step in. In addition to the music, the travel opportunities extend far beyond the Midcoast. Over the years the group has presented their music in Winchester Cathedral, England; St. Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh; Crystal Cathedral, California; St. Paul’s Chapel, New York City; The White House; El Salvador; Budapest; and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Ireland.
CDs of several performances will be available for purchase. A free will offering will be taken to help support this remarkable program that has inspired both the teens and the audiences.
