ORONO — The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team rallied in the third period to tie the University of Vermont Catamounts 2-2 Saturday night in front of 3,787
fans at Alfond Arena.

“It’s not the result we wanted,” Maine head coach Tim Whitehead said. “But there are some positives we can build off of.”

Maine drops to 2-10-2 on the season, 1-6-2 in Hockey East. Vermont moves to 3-7-3 overall, 3-5-3 in Hockey East play.

The Black Bears outshot the Catamounts 38-21 on the evening.

“I think we were fortunate to come away with a point tonight,” Vermont head coach Kevin Sneddon said. “Right from the drop of the opening face off I thought Maine
was the better team. We had chances and we didn’t put them away.”

Play started tight as the game began with a scoreless first period highlighted by few scoring opportunities and frequent penalties, including a crucial five-on-three
penalty kill by the Black Bears.

Vermont earned a two-man advantage at the 16:10 mark of the first period as Maine defender Mike Cornell and forward Kyle Beattie were each called for minor
penalties during the same play.

The Black Bears successfully clogged up passing lanes and prevented shots from getting to the net. The Bears also applied heavy pressure on the Catamounts power play,
gaining crucial momentum as the penalties expired.

Teams headed into the first intermission in a scoreless tie, combining for nine shots on net in the period as Maine outshot Vermont, 6-3.

After a scoreless first, the offense picked up pace in the second.

The Catamounts broke into the goal column first when a shot by Nick Luukko in the high slot rebounded off of Maine goaltender Martin Ouellette. Matt White
slammed the puck through the five-hole at the 4:02 mark of the second.

Nick Luukko and Brett Bruneteau chipped in assists on the goal as Vermont gained the 1-0 lead.
