WISCASSET — It was a lost night for the Lisbon High School basketball teams against Wiscasset, with the Greyhound boys falling in Tuesday’s Mountain Valley Conference opener to the Wolverines 67-42, while the Lisbon girls fell in a nail-biter, 45-43.
The Lisbon boys have little time to recover, visiting Oak Hill Wednesday at 7 p.m., while the Greyhound girls head to Wales on Thursday, looking to end a two-game losing streak.

The Greyhounds hit their first four shots and held a 9-3 lead out of the gate, but Wiscasset turned to a full-court press, and a 16-0 Wolverines run to close the first quarter followed as the hosts gained control.
“It was a nice way to start, but we just didn’t continue that pace and they responded,” said Lisbon coach Jake Gentle, whose Greyhounds have dropped three straight to fall to 1-3. “A good portion of it was our defensive rotation and we let up some penetration by getting extended too far.”
Brad Groh scored four early points for Lisbon before two quick fouls sent the senior to the bench.
Wiscasset turned to Dale Peaslee and Austin Haskell as the Wolverines began causing turnovers, eight in all in the first frame for Lisbon. Peaslee and Haskell each scored six points in the opening quarter, with Haskell’s jumper giving Wiscasset its first lead, 11-9.
After a Lisbon timeout, Haskell stole the ball twice and scored for a 15-9 lead, and Peaslee finished off the quarter with the final four points for a 10-point edge.
“It’s a learning curve, and we have to figure out that when a team goes on a run and we call a timeout we have to come out and get some multiple stops,” said Gentle, who watched his team fall behind by as many as 15 points (28-13) in the second quarter and commit 18 first-half turnovers. Lisbon trailed 32-18 at the half.
“We weren’t getting great looks and struggled to run our half-court offense, something we will have to do a better job at that,” Gentle said.
Lisbon nearly doubled its first-half point total in the third quarter, scoring 17 points as Kendal Roy hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Kyle Sheehan came off the bench to chip in four points.
But Wiscasset answered behind four points each from Matt Johnson and Dylan McMahon to take a 51-35 advantage to the fourth quarter.
“We didn’t know a lot about Lisbon coming in and decided we couldn’t sit back,” said Wiscasset coach Dana Lawrence, whose Wolverines improved to 3-1. “It is easy to play when you get a little bit of a lead, and our confidence grew as we went on and began moving the ball well.”
“When we went to the press, we were able to get some steals that led to some lay-ups,” said Peaslee, who matched teammate Travis Padilla with a game-high 16 points, while Haskell chipped in 13.
Mason Haley led Lisbon with eight points, while Sheehan chipped in seven, and Tucker Brannon and Roy six each. The Greyhounds were 16 of 46 (34 percent) from the floor and made seven of 11 free throws. Lisbon was outrebounded 30-16 and committed 24 turnovers.
Wolverine girls edge ’Hounds
Starting guard Bree Sautter fouled out and inside workhorse Denise Thomas spent nearly the entire game in foul trouble for Lisbon, which rallied late but came up just short in a two-point loss to Wiscasset.
“Denise is frustrated being in foul trouble so quick, but we had to turn a negative into a positive and go on,” said Wescott, who watched Thomas score 11 of her 15 points as Lisbon battled back from a seven-point second half deficit to set up a wild fourth quarter that featured six lead changes and two ties.
Trailing 27-23 after three quarters, Lisbon took control, reeling off a 9-0 run to open the fourth for a 32-27 lead. Thomas scored seven of those points, including a 3-pointer to give the Greyhounds their first lead since a 14-13 advantage early in the second quarter.
But Wiscasset battled back, getting two points each by Kayla Gordon, Alecia Faulkingham and Kasey Cromwell for a 33-32 advantage with 5:24 left in regulation.
“Our girls our tough physically, and I have three or four girls who play soccer, and we are able to rebound the ball well as a team,” said Wiscasset coach Patrick Quinn, whose squad improved to 2-1 nearly went rebound for rebound with Lisbon (36-33 edge for the Greyhounds).
Down 38-37 after a Bri Goud steal and layup, Lisbon came right back as Thomas drove hard to the basket after receiving a pass from Bailey Madore, but the Wolverines answered on a 3-pointer by Cromwell to put Wiscasset ahead to stay, 41-39.
Moments later, a battle for the loose ball resulted in a technical foul on Madore, with Faulkingham draining both free throws for four-point lead.
Thomas answered on Lisbon’s next possession, but Cromwell and Goud each made a free throw for 45-41 Wiscasset lead. Greyhounds leading scorer Mia Durgin (16 points) brought her team back within two points, but a pair of missed free throws allowed the Wolverines to hold on.
