Senior Citizens Club to meet

BETHEL — The Bethel Senior Citizens Club will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Bethel Methodist Church. Members will bring a dish to share and an item for the auction.

Topic: Wabanaki Commission

BRYANT POND — On Thursday, Jan. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Whitman Memorial Library, Arla Patch will speak about the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission. She has been serving on the Communications Subcommittee since last January and will share a PowerPoint giving an historical overview and current goals.

All library programs are free and open to the public.

Most Maine residents are not aware that there has been an intentional policy of assimilation of native peoples by the U.S. government since the 1800s. By stripping them of their culture, language, family and community, the avowed intention had been to “kill the Indian and save the man.” Forced residential schooling and forced adoption/foster arrangements with non-Native families set in motion a chain of intergenerational losses.

This Truth and Reconciliation Commission is being formed in Maine to discover the truth about the experiences of Wabanaki people with state child welfare programs, and to promote healing and lasting change for the children taken and their families.

College Goal Maine is Jan. 10

PARIS — A College Goal Maine event will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, in the library at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. A representative from the Finance Authority of Maine and counselors from the guidance department will be available to help students and parents complete the FAFSA.

For anyone unable to attend this session, FAME has created a Virtual FAFSA Lab at www.famemaine.com. In addition, the OHCHS guidance department will have office hours available in the evening for families to meet with Skye Kwasnick, a representative of the Maine Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.

Finally, the guidance department is available to answer questions and the aspirations lab is available during the school day for students and parents. Call the OHCHS guidance office at 743-8914, ext. 9532, for information.

Skills Challenge set for Jan. 10

PARIS — Oxford Hills Technical School has announced that Skills Challenge 2013 will be held on Thursday, Jan. 10.

Skills Challenge is a showcase event in which students from all 19 programs participate in skill-specific competitions and demonstrations for parents, community members and others. The activities will include cooking or baking specific recipes, a MIG welding contest and investigating a mock crime scene.

The event will begin at 3 p.m. and will be open to the public and parents. Light refreshments and door prizes will be provided through the generous donation of area businesses. An awards ceremony will be held at 6:30. For more information, contact Oxford Hills Technical School at 743-7756.

Dance set at Harrison VFW

HARRISON — The Harrison VFW Post on the Waterford Road will have a BYOB dance from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Jan. 12.

Fire Auxiliary public supper

PARIS — The Paris Fire Department Auxiliary will hold a public supper at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Paris Fire Department, Western Avenue.

Menu will include pork roast, mashed potatoes, veggies, macaroni and cheese, salads and homemade desserts. There will be a 50/50 raffle as well as raffles for a $50 gift certificate to Agren Appliance, a fruit basket and a free meal for the next public supper

Cost for adults is $8, ages 4-12 $4, ages 3 and under free. All proceeds will benefit the Paris Fire Department Auxiliary and Fire Personnel.

Honey Bee Club’s workshop

PARIS — The Oxford Hills Honey Bee Club’s workshop will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Oxford County Extension Center, 9 Olson Road. Speaker is commercial bee keeper Tony Bachelder. The public is welcome.

Heartsaver CPR, first aid class

OXFORD — An American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR and First Aid Class will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Oxford Public Safety Building.

A certificate of completion of the one-day class is good for two years. This is accepted for day/child care providers, loggers and any other non-healthcare related professions.

Future classes will be held Feb. 9 and March 9. Groups may request to schedule a class at their convenience. Healthcare BLS CPR recertifications are done as needed. For more information, call Patty at 671-4460.
