PARIS — Many Maine people have earned college credits but, for one reason or another, have never completed a degree. For some, earning that credential could make a significant difference in their career advancement. For others it would mark an important personal accomplishment. University College at South Paris not only offers flexible degree programs that accept previously-earned college credits and work experience, professionals at the center support students as they work toward their goals.

Programs that allow student to bring in credits from other institutions and from work experience include Bachelor of Art in liberal studies and Bachelor of Applied Science degrees from the University of Maine at Augusta. Bachelor of University Studies programs from the University of Maine and the University of Maine at Fort Kent encourage students to design an individualized program based on their education and goals. The University of Maine at Machias and the University of Southern Maine also offer online degree completion options.

Students wishing to complete a degree are helped by a growing selection of online and other distance learning courses available from the UMS campuses. Each semester, University College at South Paris offers almost 500 courses that can be applied to dozens of additional degree programs from the University of Maine System. To help students succeed, the center offers personalized support services, including tutoring, financial aid assistance and career counseling.

At 43, it had been a long time since Jennifer Grotten, a Rockland resident, had been to school. “I wasn’t really focused on what I wanted to do in life. I just wanted to get through the classes and go on to living life. University College and all the sites are really great with working with non-traditional students,” she said. “You might not know the technology, but they’ll help you learn the technology.”
