Sons of Italy meet at lodge

RUMFORD — The Gorizia Lodge 467 of the Sons of Italy will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 22, beginning at 6 p.m. at the hall in Smithcrossing. All members are strongly encouraged to attend. Meetings have moved back to the lodge at the request of members.

Cary Library book sale, gala

WAYNE — The Cary Library book sale and gala will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at the Williams House, across from the library, at 14 Old Winthrop Road.

The sale features gently used books at great prices. A limited number of tickets are available at the library: $10 per person in advance, $12 on the day of the event. Enjoy a complimentary glass of wine or cider, elegant hors d’oeuvres and homemade desserts.

The book sale continues, with no admission charge, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday Jan. 28; and from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 29-30.

Books will be priced at $1 per bag from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 2.

Food Pantry is open Friday

OTISFIELD — The Food Pantry will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at East Otisfield Free Baptist Church, Rayville Road. The pantry is open on the fourth Friday of every month. For more information, call 539-4619.

McLaughlin lecture series

PARIS — The McLaughlin Garden and Homestead has announced its 2013 lecture schedule. As in past years, the talks will be held on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. The public is invited for tea beginning at 3:30. The talks are free but donations are greatly appreciated. The lectures will be held at the McLaughlin homestead on Main Street near the Oxford County Courthouse.

The series begins on Jan. 30 when Rick Gammon from Gammon Landscape Nursery in Auburn will speak on hydrangeas. Gammon says the question he is most frequently asked is, “How do I make my blue hydrangeas bloom?” He will answer this question as he discusses how to grow and care for various varieties of hydrangeas.

Other lectures in the series are Eli Goodwin on Feb. 13 on underused plants and techniques, Mike Murphy on Feb. 27 on woodland plants, Mark Brandhorst on March 13 on rock plants, Cindy Tibbetts on March 27 on herbs and Mary Van Nest on April 10 on birds.

Bethel Seniors dinner, meeting

(edited for change in location)BETHEL — The Bethel Senior Citizens Club will meet for dinner and a meeting at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Black Diamond Restaurant at Sunday River.

The meal will be a turkey dinner. The cost is $12.

Community Networking

RUMFORD — The next Community Networking Meeting sponsored by the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition will take place at noon Thursday, Jan. 31, at the Rumford Public Library community room. Participants should bring a lunch.

Robert Mooney, civil operations NCO of the Maine National Guard, will speak about their substance abuse prevention programs. Other agenda items include community updates from the Healthy Communities as well as from other River Valley organizations.

Tar sands oil meeting Jan. 31

WATERFORD — A tar sands meeting will take place beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at the Waterford Town Office, 366 Valley Road.
