Sgt. promoted, home on leave

LEWISTON — Jacob Mousseau, son of William and Anne Mousseau of 10 Noble St., has been promoted to sergeant in the United States Army. Sgt. Mousseau was promoted on Dec. 1 in Dageu, South Korea, where he is with the 25th Transportation Battalion. His duty there is the health, welfare and training of nine soldiers, including three Korean soldiers.

Before heading to South Korea Mousseau was stationed in Khandahar, Afghanistan, as a machine gunner on a personal security squad.

Mousseau came home on leave in January before leaving for Fort Campbell in Danville, Ky.

Cary Library book sale, gala

WAYNE — The Cary Library book sale and gala will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at the Williams House, across from the library, at 14 Old Winthrop Road.

The sale features gently used books at great prices. A limited number of tickets are available at the library: $10 per person in advance, $12 on the day of the event. Enjoy a complimentary glass of wine or cider, elegant hors d’oeuvres and homemade desserts.

The book sale continues, with no admission charge, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday Jan. 28; and from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 29-30.

Books will be priced at $1 per bag from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 2.

Sabattus seniors to meet, dine

SABATTUS — The next monthly meeting of the Sabattus Seniors will be held Thursday, Feb. 7, at Maxwell Gill Hall. The menu for February is beef stew, pickled beets, pickles, mixed fruit and cookies.

Sign up by calling Pauline at 375 4037. Planners will be using the December sign up sheet as there was no meeting in January. Anyone who is on the December sign up who does not plan to attend should call Pauline no later than Sunday, Feb. 2.

Being winter if there is no school, there is no meeting. Postponed meetings will be held the following Thursday.

Upcoming trips are sugar party in Canada, Atlantic City, New York, Washington and more. For those trips listed call Jean at 784-5264. Interested people may also contact Helen at 375-6588 for her trips. It is not required to belong to the seniors to attend the trips.

Film: ‘Truth about Nestle’

BRUNSWICK — “Bottled Life – The Truth about Nestle’s Business with Water” will be shown at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at Curtis Library, Pleasant and Middle streets.

Nestle in Switzerland has turned ordinary water into a billion-dollar business. The company dominates the global business in bottled water.

Swiss journalist Res Gehringer has investigated this money-making phenomena. Nestle refused to cooperate, on the pretext that it was “the wrong film at the wrong time,” so Gehringer went on a journey of exploration, researching the story in the USA, Nigeria and Pakistan. His journey into the world of bottled water reveals the schemes and strategies of the most powerful food and beverage company on the planet.

Following the film, Chris Buchanan, Maine coordinator, Defending Water for Life in Maine, will lead a discussion about the efforts to protect water in Maine.

This event is free and open to the public. Donations will cover the costs of using the Morrell Room. Refreshments will be served.

College planning workshops set

LEWISTON — The Maine Educational Opportunity Center will host free Essentials of College Planning workshops for adults 19 and over at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6 and 27, at  the Lewiston CareerCenter, 5 Mollison Way. To register or for more information, call 1-800-281-3703 or visit meoc.maine.edu.

MEOC successfully placed 1,073 Maine adults in different colleges last year. The interactive workshop is the starting point for all participants. It outlines the four steps in the college process: admissions, financial aid, career planning and study skills. The workshop lasts approximately two to three hours. Preregistration is required.
