100 years ago, 1913
A delegation of hardened hunters visited the panther zone around maple Hill in Auburn yesterday morning. They found tracks of some strange wild animal, followed said tracks several hours and when darkness came had the “panther panting” as one of the hunters put it. And he added that there were others panting when the trail was finally abandoned. “Gramp” Morse, a well known Lewiston hunter, and Chester Teel, a promising amateur, found fresh tracks supposed to have been made by the Auburn puma near the basin, so called, just above North Auburn.

50 years ago, 1963
More fire department personnel, a full-time drillmaster, more fire alarm boxes and additional fire inspectors are outstanding among recommendations of the National Board of Fire Insurance Underwriters’ survey of Lewiston. The recommendations said that at least four men, including a company officer, be on duty at all times with each company and that the drillmaster be relieved of some of his other duties so that he can be free to conduct more frequent drills at the drill tower and officers’ schools.

25 years ago, 1988
The Auburn city manager and the city’s new tax assessor this morning met to discuss whether the city should sink between $150,000 and $180,000 into a new computer system to help with a citywide property revaluation. City Manager Paula Valente said late this morning that she prefers not to disclose her decision on the new computer system until Monday morning when she will meet with city councilors.
