FARMINGTON — Student members of the Sustainable Campus Coalition at the University of Maine at Farmington are preparing for the annual recycled sledding contest planned for Sunday, Feb. 10.

In past years, a refrigerator door and sleeping bags were used in the contest. Cardboard and duct tape often are used. So are recyclable packaging materials and duct tape.

“It will last for two runs,” Alexa Kusmik predicted of the sleds, based on her participation the past two years.

Sleds need to be made from recyclable items to promote two goals of the Sustainable Campus Coalition: “To educate the campus and the community about environmental sustainability and to  advocate collaboration and camaraderie among students, faculty, staff, and the community, while working toward common sustainability goals,” according to its website.

A decision is expected Friday on whether the event takes place at 3 p.m. Feb. 10 in the Amphitheatre behind the Student Center on campus, or whether it will be postponed until March 3, Kelsey Ottmann, one of three student coordinators for the coalition, said Monday.

The decision  will be posted on their website at sustainablecampus.umf.maine.edu.

The public is welcome to participate by creating sleds or watching the fun, she said.

Along with refreshments, prizes donated by local businesses will be awarded for the most creative sleds.
