Word puzzles earn cash

PARIS — Patrons can win $5 in March at the Paris Public Library by solving word puzzles. Visit the library, pick a handout with three cryptograms with clues to take home and return the finished puzzles to the library by the end of March.

At the end of March, one puzzle sheet will be randomly drawn from a container. It will be checked for accuracy. If correct, the winner will be contacted to pick up their $5. All word lovers are welcome.

Dinner benefits Wayne Hakala

LOCKE MILLS — A special benefit dinner for Wayne Hakala will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the American Legion Hall.

The meal will be buffet style consisting of spaghetti, casseroles, salads, breads, desserts and beverages. This is put on by the American Legion Auxiliary, Fire Dept. Auxiliary and many friends. It will be $10 for adults and children free. For more information call 875-2375.

Breakfast, book fair

PARIS — The Norway-Paris Kiwanis Club annual Community Breakfast & Children’s Book Fair will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, in the OHCHS Culinary Arts dining room.

The cost is $6 and free for kids 12 and under. Kiwanis members will be serving pancakes, French toast, eggs, sausage, hash brown, coffee and juice. In partnership with Right Start and Read Across America, each child will receive a new book.

Thursday, March 21: Basic Astronomy with Tom Hoffelder, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Four weeks. Tuition is $25.

Wednesday, March 27: Backyard Gardening with Patrick Carson, 5 to 6:30 p.m. Eight weeks. Tuition is $45. Students can purchase book from instructor for $22.

Hike at Maggie’s Nature Park

GREENWOOD — The Mahoosuc Land Trust invites eager hikers to experience the winter wonders of Maggie’s Nature Park from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 16. This hike will begin at the trail head to Maggie’s Park in Greenwood.

Though some may want to snowshoe to scenic outlooks, all ages will be able to tackle the gentle hike on Maggie’s loop, so bring the whole family. Snowshoes and poles needed. Snacks will be provided, and everyone is encouraged to bring water.

Directions to the trail head: From Locke Mills, take Howe Hill Road off Route 26. After one-tenth of a mile, turn left onto Greenwood Road. The parking lot will be on the right in 1.4 miles. From the south, turn onto Greenwood Road from Route 219 in West Paris. Continue for 5.7 miles and watch for the parking lot on the left.

Legion cribbage tournament

NORWAY — A cribbage tournament will take place Saturday, March 16, at American Legion Post 82.

The admission fee is $10. Doors open at 1 p.m. Game starts at 2.

Prizes will be given for first, second and third place. Refreshments will be available.

Proceeds will benefit Responsible Pet Care.

Middle School Chinese auction

PARIS — A Chinese auction will be held Saturday, March 16, at the Oxford Hills Middle School. Doors open at 4 p.m. with drawings beginning at 6:15.

Proceeds will go to the Boy Scout Troop 130 for camping and other activities. More than 200 items will be auctioned. Food items and drinks will be for sale throughout the auction.
