Genealogical Society to meet

FARMINGTON — The Sandy River Valley Chapter, Maine Genealogical Society, will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Farmington Public Library.

Nancy Porter will talk about some of the diaries and daybooks that were kept by some of the very early residents of Farmington. The information found in them may be of interest to the genealogist and family historian. Anyone with an interest in genealogy is welcome to attend.

Keep Me Warm Supper March 9

FAYETTE — There will be a Keep Me Warm Supper from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Fayette School.

Menu includes baked beans, casseroles, salads and desserts. This will be the final one for this season. There will be music and raffles.

Knights free public supper

JAY — This month’s free public supper will be held on Saturday, March 9, at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Main Street. Doors open at noon and serving is from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

The menu will be boiled dinner, vegetables, potatoes, soup, salad, bread, dessert and drinks. The friend of the supper this month is an anonymous donor “in loving memory of Albert St. Pierre.”

Ladies breakfast is March 9

NEW PORTLAND — The Western Mountains Baptist Church will host their monthly Ladies Breakfast at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 9. Bring a dish to share.

There will be a brief study from the Bible and plenty of time to connect with old and new friends. All women are welcome.

Local author at Cary Library

WAYNE — The Cary Memorial Library will present a program by local author Betsy Connor Bowen at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at the Williams House, 14 Old Winthrop Road, across from the library.

Bowen has just edited and published “Back From Tobruk,” her father’s WWII memoir. In 1941, Croswell Bowen, journalist and photographer, joined AFS volunteer ambulance drivers and served alongside the British Eighth Army in Africa and the Middle East. Bowen will talk about her father and the book, and show WWII photographs, including some of her father’s work.

Clearwater Homemakers

FARMINGTON — The Clearwater Homemakers will hold a program called “A Matter of Balance” at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 14, at Shorey Chapel.

Grange plans ‘Souper Supper’

CHESTERVILLE — The Chesterville Grange will be having a “Souper Supper” on Friday, March 15, serving between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Fish chowder luncheon

FARMINGTON — The Fairbanks Union Church will hold a fish chowder luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, March 15.

The luncheon includes fish chowder, biscuit, pickles, cheese, dessert and coffee or tea. Donation is $6. Meals can be delivered within five miles of the church. Call 778-4705.

Conservation programs

FARMINGTON — Paul Hersey, district conservationist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, has announced a second ranking period for the Organic Initiative and the Seasonal High Tunnel Initiative.

Interested producers should contact the Farmington NRCS office soon to find out if they are eligible for either of these programs. Applications for the second ranking period of 2013 are due at the NRCS offices by close of business on April 19. Both initiatives are funded through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program and offer technical and financial assistance.
