AUBURN — Voters will go Auburn Hall to cast their school referendum ballot in June, councilors agreed Monday.
City Clerk Sue Clement-Dallaire said the city looks to save at least $4,000 by only having one polling place for the election. She needs to hire fewer election judges to monitor the vote and needs fewer supplies.
The vote is scheduled for June 11.
Councilors voted 6-1 in favor of the plan, with Councilor Leroy Walker dissenting. Walker said having the polling place in Auburn Hall requires voters to park in the Mechanics Row Parking Garage. Much of the ground floor of the garage is used as official police department parking.
“If you can get (those police cars) moved, I don’t think people would mind,” Walker said. “They don’t realize they can keep going up and get more public parking. They stop down there and can’t find a place to park, and it’s become a big problem.”
Councilor Belinda Gerry said that voters should continue driving up to the second floor of the garage because it has a walkway connecting with Auburn Hall’s second floor and the community room where ballots will be.
“It has better access,” she said. “People with limited mobility can walk straight across without having to worry about elevators or stairs, and all of the doors have automatic triggers. So it has great accessibility.”
City councilors and school officials are scheduled to meet March 25 to discuss the school’s budget.
