SABATIS — About 35 young men about Sabatis are making extensive plans for a minstrel show, which will be given in Lombard’s opera house sometime the 4th of April. The first rehearsal was held the first of the week in Temperance hall, and Wednesday evening final arrangements will be made. It is thought that a coach from Portland will be hired and six end men will make things lively from start to finish. This will be given for the benefit of the baseball association.

50 years ago, 1963

Three of four Auburn teenagers involved in an ELHS bomb hoax which was prompted by a 25 cent bet, according to police, today were sentenced to work for the Auburn Recreation Department for 20 days. All three admitted they did this to gain a couple of hours out of classes. The mother of one of the boys said that her son had no interest in school. “I can force him to stay at a table with a book in front of him, but I can’t make him study,” she advised the court. Lewiston Attorney Benjamin L. Berman, who represented one of the boys, suggested she compel her son to read, aloud, at least one paragraph from any good book each day.”

25 years ago, 1988

When John Power was a young lad in Clonea Carrick-on-Sur, County Waterford, Ireland, he watched his mother “throw stuff together” to feed her 14 children. So Saturday, he begins throwing things together to feed approximately 300 people at the annual St. Patrick’s Day Dance to take place at the Multi-Purpose Center, Lewiston,. The event is being planned by Edie and Byron Adams of Lewiston, who for several years have devoted much of their energies to helping the patients of the U.S. Veterans Administration Hospital at Togus, where Power is the chef.
